Rock.......Will your dealer allow you to trade your Tannoy Turnberry speakers or will you have to sell them? I'm not surprised you were impressed with the Bryston Model T's. Owners and reviewers alike are giving very positive reports about these speakers. The new tweeter raised the bar even higher. At 89 dB efficient the Bryston Model T's will require a little more than twice the output power for a given volume level when compared to the Tannoy Turnberry's 93 dB efficiency. That would be the biggest consideration if amplifier power will be a concern.
It sounds to me like the Model T speakers wooed you and your wife a little better than the Tannoy Kensington's. Both the Tannoy Kensington GR and the Bryston Model T speakers look super.

Dan,
Actually, the dealer is offering me excellent trade-in value for the Turnberrys, on either speaker I decide to buy. The Tannoys I am looking at are actually gently used and are not the new GR version. If I am honest I prefer them compared to the new GR series, at least in terms of look. The new GR's have the walnut finish, while the used have a mahogany finish, that I think is much more appealing. If I go for the Bryston, then I will be keeping my 501's, I don't think I will pursue tube amplifiers. On the other hand if I go for the Tannoys then I still may opt for some tube amps. My cash outlay, with my Turnberrys is nearly the same for the Tannoys or the Brystons which makes the decision that much more.. Hmm.. shall I say interesting?.. Right now, I am sorta leaning with Bryston, and my wife is leaning to the Tannoys… Given their different presentation, there are no bad choices here… I just have to decide what I want direction I want for the next few years… |

Rock.......Quite the quandary. I don't think a mistake can be made with either decision. It might be a good thing to let the wife have it her way. It might pay big dividends when other gear temptations appear on the horizon.

I think the collective AA community should vote!
+1 for Tannoys!

She did say that if it was her choice she'd go with the Tannoys… but, Oddly enough when we got home and she turned on our alternate system, she remarked that the Middle T Bryston might be quite the upgrade over the ProAcs… ..I told her maybe I need a better amp instead of new speakers... I think I'm good either way..

Gorgeous either way. But the rich color of the mahogany is attractive!

In the flesh the mahogany is more.. delicious as Alberto might say. The walnut has to be hand polished, with a wax provided by Tannoy… I supposed if you need to show some regular intimate TLC to your speakers… .. who am I to judge… whatever floats your boat..eh...

Just pulled on trigger on a new pair of Bryston Modet T (passive) in Natural Rosewood with the large Outriggers (same as Ivan ordered). Should take delivery in 3 to 4 weeks...
Twas not an easy decision... but, you only live once.. right?... Last edited by Haurock; 08-28-2014 at 12:40 PM. |

Trust your ears, of course, but I would vote for the Tannoy. Classic look, classic sound and, at least in my case, I never tire of them. Properly positioned they image like crazy, disappear completely and project a sound stage bigger than anything I've had in my home - at least 3-6 feet to either side and 10 feet up in the air. Awesome! I believe that the "coaxial" tweeter has a lot to do with it. It simulates a point source. Decisions, decisions. Two great speakers, hard to go wrong either way. Keep us posted you lucky guy! Alberto |
