501 vs 601 advantages? This is a sickness?

So, is it normal (and healthy) to suddenly make a serious consideration to "upgrade" from my "new" 501's to 601's? For no particular reason other than I can "justify" it by believing that it's a good deal? 601 a better long term investment?

I've had great luck with all the used McIntosh amplifiers and preamplifiers in term of appreciation. The 501 and 601 are both holding their value. Since the 601 is current, McIntosh will raise their prices along the way, which in turn increases the value of your amplifier.

More important might be that the 601 is voiced differently. I've owned three 601's and they are a very neutral and dynamic amplifiers, contrasted with McIntosh's earlier SS amps which to me have a more lush and romantic sound.

And of course the 601's have these really big badass blue meters.

Know of an individual who contracted an audio strain of the Flu maybe 10 plus years ago -- hasn't been able to shake it to this day.

His early days consisted of the following. You would not believe what it has done to him.

I'd go for the 601's. You'll probably get better resale down the line compared to the 501's.
Plus, if there's still decent demand for the 501's, it won't take as long to sell them, now.
Having had the 501's, their reputation as lush, romantic, and bass heavy seemed overblown to me.

Speaking of holding value..what is the current msrp of 601. I saw a list once that showed the old gear, date of manufacture and the final msrp of said gear before being discontinued. I'd like a glance at that list again if anyone has one to PM me.

No it is not healthy.
It is a disease, quite a serious one even, and if you think this is a self-help group, you're at the wrong place.

This being said, I think you should go for the 601s!

Doug.......The last McIntosh price list I saw was for 2015. The MC601 was listed for $7000.00.
