I've got an SX-1250 in very nice condition, partially restored. I have a bit more work to do to bring it up to 100%. But it is close.

It actually sounds really good. I haven't measured its power output, but given the size of the power transformer, filter caps, and heatsinks, I'd bet it's an honest 160 wpc as advertised. The tuner is on par with my MR-80, and that is saying a lot.

There are a few pieces from this era the are highly sought after. The SX-1250 is a notable one, with values increasing rapidly.

In the early days I always sort of looked down on receivers as being inherently inferior to separates. Now I'm not so sure.

Especially with the drool-worthy MA-8000 drawing a bead on my pocketbook.

Holy smokes. I think that's the receiver my dad owned!! Grew up with that in our living room driving a pair of Infinity speakers. Anybody know which model this infinity is?? It has smoked black glass resting on top, piezo tweeter front and back and woofers both front and underneath. I took his speakers to college with me. Loved those speakers.

A clean unrestored SX-1250 will set you back between $1000 and $1500. Restoration will add another $1000 or more, depending on who does the work.

It's stlll a bargain, IMO. I used mine daily in our lake home until I replaced it with McIntosh separates; MC275V, C2300, and MR80.

Bought a pair of L100s heading back to college from winter break in 1976. Powered by a Kenwood KR9600. Loved those speakers for what htey were - a rock-the-house speaker.

The Phase Linear which advocated an unregulated power supply to handle very high instantaneous power peaks and the Bose 1801 power amplifier that had tightly regulated power rails. I still have a Phase Linear 400 that I bought used around 1978. I always liked the sound of these and mine proved reliable, although I haven't listened to it in probably 20 years. The Bose 1801, was something to behold. Very beefy and attractive with all those LEDs, but I never thought it sounded all that good. Then Davey O'Brien came to our store to do a clinic and we measured it and it did not measure particularly well. I personally never sold one. The best big amp to own from that era (i.e. mid-1970s), in my opinion, was and is the McIntosh MC2300.

Yeah, I saw a PL 4000 for sale on eBay for about $250. I almost bought it but I have so much equipment lying around it would probably just end up on a shelf. I never got into McIntosh back in the day - my loss.
