He didn't leave Krell. He was forced out of Krell in 2009. Since he had a no compete clause for a period of time, he may have had little or nothing to do with the iPod docks or any recent products.

I am only guessing that since his new venture is never going to make several iterations of the same product, he figured he would deliver a product that would cover the greatest number of potential buyers. I am not qualified to challenge his position that when they are off, they are completely out of the loop.
