For me personal, I prefer both, a well done recording and a nice performance. Most recent recordings are very bad. Most of the time a lot of compression, and the mastering is terrible.

If you like classical music, listen to the RCA Living Stereo Recordings. All recorded from 1955 till 1965. Excellent quality, both recording and performance. Most are recorded with three mikes. Or listen to some old jazz music like Dave Brubeck. Sounds great and the performance is wonderful. I do really not understand why music from this years sounds so much better compared to recent recordings...What's going wrong?

Listen to one of those excellent recordings you reference on your phone and you'll know exactly.

Pjotr, while I do love the jazz and classical recordings of the late 50s and the 60s very much, I find the sound of a lot of the modern classical, and also jazz albums superior to their "ancestors".
Channel Classics, Challenge Classics, trptk, Chandos, Alpha and many more labels take pride in delivering fantastic quality.

Taste is different for everyone. Channel Classics is ok, Chandos depends on albums, I don't like Trptk, there is something very "digital" on the sound. I prefer the old ones because of the color of the instruments and real space. The newer recordings are technical superior but sometimes they sound to technical. It also depends on the media. For me the best sound is from a tape machine.

Yes and all, except Alpha, offer them in multichannel!

hi Kai, Pjort27,Bart and anyone watching it would be great if you'd post links to an album/download that exemplifies what you mean.

A couple of examples by the trptk label:

Arvo Pärt's 'Fratres' is astonishing.

Orchestral music by a chamber ensemble.
Fantastic!
