I was surprised to hear they wanted me to send it to a third party for service.

Regarding checking it. I had it out several months back, when it had the same issue. I got it unstuck, after a few tries, and lubed some parts. It worked, and now it is doing the same thing again.

It's not getting hung up on the external adjustable frame. It has clearance on all sides there.

So, I figured replace it, and not have to deal with it again.

I did get a model number for the drive, so I may get that on line, and try to figure out how to change the drawer, since the drawer is not a typical drawer. It is extended.

I found one on the web new for $59 it is probably worth a try for that price.

It's sad that DM Holdings moved support and service off to a third party so fast.

Escient support had always been excellent in the past.

It.

I worry that swapping the drive will not resolve the issue if it is a drawer/drive interface issue.

Good news -

McIntosh emailed me back today, and said they will find me a replacement CD Drive.

Now, I can either try to fix mine again, and save the new one for another day, or put they new one in.

Special thanks to Gail in McIntosh Parts!!

It's nice to have spare parts for stuff. I have a replacement hard disk as well.

This is very good news. It's far easier and assuring to replace
the old with a new one without having to worry of anything else.

Chuck.......You are correct that Escient is the company that supported the McIntosh MS300 and MS750 Music Servers. When a server needed service it did not get repaired by McIntosh, it was repaired by Escient. The comments about McIntosh not supporting MS300 and MS750 service are off base, since it has always been Escient performing needed repairs. Now that Escient has closed its doors, D&M has contracted with Panurgy, a service provider in New Jersey, to repair the MS300 and MS750 servers. I don't see a new authorized service center, in place of a defunct Escient service center, as bailing out on customers. How many other companies might have just said tough luck to customers if their server manufacturer closed shop?

Kudos to you for being able to perform a repair on your own MS300. I am like that myself, and much prefer to make a repair myself whenever possible. If all else fails, at least there is still an authorized repair center available for the McIntosh MS300 and MS750 music servers.

Dan,
I expected more from McIntosh, and Escient. I understand they have contracted with Panurgy, they told me that in their first email reply. I felt like I got the brush off when I talked to them about my parts request the first time.
When they won't sell a part to an owner of one of their pieces of equipment and it's not that old, I felt like they were bailing on the MS owners. Speaking only for myself, I would have expected some one to sell me parts. No one would do that at first.
Regarding Panurgy, they could be a very good repair center, but I can tell you that my first interaction with them didn't give me that warm fuzzy feeling I got from working with Escient in the past, and McIntosh Service in the present.
In fact after my first interaction with Panurgy, I emailed Escient Support. Someone from there actually got right back to me, (I mean I got an email reply in less then 5 minutes) explained the situation, and provided me with some Sony model numbers that they thought would work as a replacement.
After I talked to Panurgy, I also emailed Gail back at McIntosh. I explained what happened when I called Panurgy. She then took the ball and made it right for the customer. I got the warm fuzzy feeling back.

So, what started off as a bad experience ended up with a happy ending.
I am glad I got the part, along with my spare hard disc, all I need to find now is a power supply and a PC board!

Chuck.......I chose your post to respond to because you were the only one who spoke of Escient. From the very beginning Escient was the only service center for the MS300 and MS750. With other posters acting surprised or deploring the loss of McIntosh service for their music servers, I was merely pointing out the McIntosh never serviced their music servers.

I have had no reason to contact Panurgy about my MS750, so I cannot speak of their customer service and support. Still, it is good that you managed to come out on top of the situation despite the tepid start.

Chuck.......I have been giving some thought to the replacement transport in your MS300. Since Escient provided you with some Sony CD transport model numbers that they thought would work as a replacement, I began to wonder if a different model number Sony transport would work with the existing transport software driver in the McIntosh operating system. There are as many software drivers as there are transports. It would be ideal if the same driver worked for the new model number Sony transports. Keep us posted as the repair progresses.
