JL Audio E112 in the house!
Greetings gang....
Some of you have followed the progress of my office Crown system for some time, over the last two years or so it has grown quite a bit. One thing that has been missing in the mix is a premium grade subwoofer, I've had more than one installed, with the last one being a JBL ES250PBK, which unfortunately didn't last long (about 1-1/2 years) before it gave up the ghost (failed plate amp I suspect). That went down last December, and I'd had other priorities to get off my plate (i.e. McIntosh MCD/MDA1000, Bryston BUC-1, etc) before I could focus on saving up for a sub replacement. I've really missed having a sub in the system-while my JBL 4401's are a very nice little speaker and sound very good, they are a small, nearfield monitor with a 6-1/2" woofer. They just can't reach the lowest frequencies, a good sub is really needed. This last Friday, the long-awaited replacement arrived, in the form of a JL Audio E112. Some may tend to view the E-series as a "cheap" alternative to the revered Fathom series. I'm here to tell you there is nothing cheap about this sub-its fit and finish are superb, and its performance is outstanding. It goes deep, plays loud with complete aplomb, a perfect solution for my office system. It is HEAVY at 73 pounds net weight-I had to literally wrestle this thing into place, it seemed a nearly impossible task in the tight quarters I was dealing with. The results were certainly worth the effort, for this is a splendid product.        I haven't gotten really scientific with the adjustments as yet. I'm crossing at roughly 60Hz, and using the built in crossover and high pass feature to feed from 60hz up back to my Crown SA-2 amplifier. There is a multi-position phase selector switch, along with a polarity switch (0 or 180 degrees). For the moment I've got both of the phase controls set at zero, and the master gain just past the 9 O'clock position. With just these rudimentary settings, I'm really happy with the results. The sub is equally great with music and with movie soundtracks. I've been having a "blast" all weekend....with the E112's 12-inch long throw, dual spider woofer and 1500 watt on board amplifier, this unit pressurizes my office quite effortlessly. Obviously a huge improvement, and I can't imagine being any happier. Here is a shot of one of my JBL 4401's that are uesed in tandem with the E112:  And a bit more of the system itself:  I've wired the sub in with Wireworld Oasis cabling, in keeping with the rest of the system's wiring.
