Silver cables better with McIntosh?
I have not invested much in interconnects , speaker wire, power cables in the last few years .
Thought it was best to have basic components correct and than get quality cables. Where I work I have access to Audioquest, Kimber Cable and Cardas. Never been big fan of Cardas but been using their basic crosslink cables. If choosing between Kimber Cable or Audioquest which works better with McIntosh? Is Silver interconnects better with McIntosh? Dan

I personally find silver to be too bright for my tastes. If you feel that your system is missing some sparkle in the top end then it might be worth a try. I am a big fan of Kimber copper (Hero interconnects and 8PR speaker wire) with my vintage Mac tube system. I will also qualify my preferences by admitting that I prefer a relaxed sound and I am not a fan of the detailed 'hifi' sound that I encounter in most systems.

Can't comment on the other brands but I know Kimber extremely well.
In their line the 8TC speaker wire is probably the best performance for the $. If you had low power and small speakers than you could go for the 4TC. For interconnects depends on budget, but PBJ for starters, Timbre (same but with clear Teflon) for slightly more, and then the happy place is probably the Hero. For amps PowerKord PK10, and for sources etc on the PK14. Just consider the econo in either. Forget the gold or silver plated versions. They are identical except for the treatment on the Wattgate connector and the price jumps more than it's worth IMHO. The interconnect between the 2300 and the 301 is probably pretty critical, as are your speaker wires, and primary source. And then just go from there. I've always hated spending so much money on some of our interconnects and wires, but I've settled into buying only the length that I need and nothing more. That way you get the best performance, and can get into some products (and performance) that would have been unreasonable in longer lengths. Last edited by junker; 04-02-2013 at 12:38 AM. |

I am using the pure silver interconnect cables ( KS1136 XLR ) through out and Silver/Copper ( KS 3035 ) speaker cables with great results.

I think silver sounds better with McIntosh tube gear too.

Copper for me. But cables built on logical and researched principles please. Not those thin and flat ones- ones with good build, insulation, shielding, good damping properties, not those fancy looking and priced ones.
If silver sounds full bodied, good control, why not? Just haven't found a very balanced one yet. Sent from my iPhone using A.Aficionado |

Copper for me too. I had silver speaker cables and they drove me batty. It was so bright sounding - even after break in. All copper now, saved money and achieved better results.
If I was doing it all over again today, I would get Shunyata Power Cords. The WW Eclipse 6 IC's and Speaker Cables which I have are excellent for the money. Mike |

As for the OP's question, I would think that silver cables go well with McIntosh in terms of balancing the sound, as I find McIntosh gear to be generally lush.
