Here's another mini review of the Devialet-D from 6Moons.com. The reviewer had an all Souluution set-up and was pretty impressed with this unit:

Cyril.......The Devialet-D is am impressive Class D product. The specifications are quite impressive, like SNR: 130 dB Unweighted — Zero Noise.
Thanks for the link.

Dan...my pleasure. I am just going to keep on posting positive reviews of Class D amps until Brad acknowledges that there is such a thing as a positively reviewed Class D amp
Ok I am just joking... I thought the Hifi News review was pretty comprehensive and gave a pretty nice review of the technology (the link to review could be found in my previous post under the "Product Information" link. Last edited by cmalak; 08-21-2010 at 02:22 PM. |

Ok I promise to stop after this but I remembered that NAD came out with a digital integrated amp (Class D) that got great reviews and some product of the Year awards. In fact my dealer in Boston never carried NAD before but when they heard the M2 first carried only that amp and then decided to carry a few more NAD products. They said the M2 held its own with some very high end Boulder and Simaudio electronics that cost 2x-6x+ the cost of the M2. Here are some links to NAD's product page and reviews:

Brad...you are right, you never said that all class D amps are a waste of time. That was my interpretation of what you said. So please do not take any offense. But you have to admit that your commentary was questioning the motives of the high-end manufacturers in building Class D amps. That questioning and your statement that you "have not read any article highly praising" any class D amps seems to suggest that you are not enamored with the technology at the very least. Like I said, I don't have an opinion as i have not heard any examples of Class D amps. My point is that sometimes a certain technology or category of technology gets a bad rap from early products that are less than stellar and enthusiasts tend to write the entire category off based on these examples. I think that is a mistake but you are entitled to your opinion as am I. Furthermore, you suggested there were no reviews that praised any class D amps, and I provided the folks at AA with a few examples that seem to be quite chock full of praise. I did not read any caveats or waffling along the lines you mention ("in it's class", "on it's own terms", "for what it is", "in it's price range", "in it's category" etc...) except in the Tech Radar review of the ARC DS450 which I don't regard as an authoritative source to begin with. In fact, in the case of the ARC DSi200, Devialet and the NAD M2 reviews, these units were favorably compared to traditional Class A and Class A/B amps many times their cost and held their own and in some attributes surpassed the competition.
Hope this finds you well. |
