edward3132.......I believe it is 75% of original retail price. At $13K a pair the trade value of a pair of MC601's would be $13,000 x .75 = $9750.

Correct about the trade in value but the fine print states that the new item must be equal or more of the combination of 75% of the original retail price plus the original price of the item so for a pair of 601's at original price of 13K that would be $9750 + $13K or $22750. So the new item must cost more than the $22,750

At least that is how I under stand the deal to read

Edward

Why would a dealer have to contact McIntosh to take in a trade, approve of your purchase.......your relationship is with your local dealer not with McIntosh.

We used to take trades constantly and it offered a opportunity for many to get started in Mac who could not afford new with the assurance that we the dealer would stand behind the product.

Sure the corporate accountant would look at that stack of $100 dollar bills sitting on the used shelf as a liability but any salesperson worth their salt had to look at it as a opportunity to help someone get into a Mac. Yes you actually had to exercise some outreach to let prospects know about the used pieces, couldn't just sit around hoping to have some buyer fall into your lap.

I would guess that many Mac dealers are petrified of tying up their cash flow by taking in used units......and are using the "fine print" to wangle a way to not participate.

Could it be that Mac is trying to nudge their dealers along into doing the old school things that those of us who successfully sold Mac back in the day did?

I never understood these trade up programs either. All boils down to what the traded equipment is worth to the dealer. Money is money. Unless McIntosh Laboratory is going into the used equipment business, I don't understand the role they play in trading equipment.

I was told by a Mac dealers that these trade up programs are run at certain times when sales are slow. The item that gets traded in normally will be sold by the dealer. The item may go back to McIntosh for a refreshing but they don’t get involved with used equipment as a rule.

I used to get from McIntosh every month or so two sheets listing all the contacts they received from interested potential clients. One was those that contacted the factory directly and another that showed those that had circled their interest by circling bingo cards attached to magazine interest sections.

We then sent a invitation to visit the showroom and added the name to our mailing list.

If you have given your email to Mac I would expect them to nudge you along to visit your local dealer just like they helped us do back in the day.

You have no idea of the extremes I would go to to make trades work out for my clients....the stories that could be told....

So with this program, McIntosh gets to sell new product, and the dealers get stuck with a used piece that they have "paid" 75% of its original MSRP that they have to try to sell which they will probably take a loss on because there is no way someone would pay 75% of retail price for a used piece?

I guess they are hoping the volume of new sales will make up for the loss the dealer is going to have to take on every piece of used gear that comes in. Seems unfortunate for McIntosh to force the dealer to basically over pay for used equipment.

Keep in mind there's a lot of older McIntosh that sells for 75% of original MSRP on the open market, or even more. An original C22 preamplifier which originally sold for $399 now commands anywhere from $3,000 - $6,000 today.

Make no mistake, there's every possibility the dealer will come out better in the final wash by trading in equipment than he would with the straight cash customer who's a tough negotiator.
