Lastly, as you can see, AA is a pretty cool place. Everyone is very helpful.

Hey Joe, thanks for asking. Scorcher here in Seaford today, eh?

System sounds fantastic! Maybe still could use a little bass boost now and then, but overall, WOW, just love it. I don't really understand how it did it, but the mc452 actually makes those mediocre recordings I whined about earlier in this thread sound wonderful again. Thank you mc452! Now I get what the Salon 2 is all about, and I love it. And I'm doing this all through a Sunfire prepro to boot! Gotta admit, although I dont have a large frame of reference, the Sunfire TGP5 has a VERY good analog preamp when in source direct mode. When I had the B&W N803, I picked up a used Rowland Capri preamp to try out, and heard no difference. Maybe now with the Salons I would hear it, but not back then.

Now I'm wrestling with the next big upgrade, the prepro: Krell S1200, Bryston SP3, Mac MX150, Classe SSP-800. Each will surely sound great, but all are wanting in one way or another. After that, last piece of puzzle will be server with built-in storage, ie, Aurender, W4S MS2, Olive, etc.

I can't imagine how much better this will all sound in the end, but the best part of it is that, finally, I can actually enjoy what I've got while I work through the next steps. Happy listening...

Jeff,

Hate to say it but, I told you so!

If you are staying long term with the MC452, I would suggest the C2300. Unless you are looking for a Pre with a DAC.

Enjoy!

Mike

Yes, you were right. Totally admit it. As for pre, I really would prefer a one box prepro solution cuz my Salons and the mc452 are integrated into a HT system. That's why I mentioned the prepros above. If I went with a standalone pre (say to complement the mx150's digital only inputs), I would probably get the C50. Not for the dac, but because I want to stay SS (don't want to mess with tubes) and really like having tone controls. The C50 seems like a good mid-priced pre. I also like the Classe CP800 for its flexibility and great asynchronous USB implementation. Lastly, for bargain deal, I'd certainly look at the giant killer W4S STP-SE, and on higher end legend basis, maybe the ARC Ref 3 or 5 (ok, for this level, I would consider going tubes, hehe). But prepro is first priority, and hoping I can find a one box solution that ticks all the boxes

Jeffkad,

Now that you have a great set of speakers and amp to anchor your system, I would recommend a better DAC. In the sub $6K range, I've found the PSAudio Perfect Wave MKII to be very musical and I've heard in others' systems that the Lampizator and Bel Canto flagships are both detailed and musical. I'm jealous of those Salons!

Jeff.......I think the Bryston SP3 will give you the best of both world, an excellent surround processor, and a reference level preamplifier. I have read many positive reports and reviews on the SP3. They can't all be blowing smoke. The SP3 is turning out to be the pre/pro to beat.

Sorry havent responded here in awhile. Dan, yes, the SP3 is right up there as a contender. Only concern is complete lack of EQ, which my second contender has (the Krell S-1200). I think either of these will give me an excellent one-box solution: a top notch HT processor and an excellent preamp and DAC.

I really want the great built-in DAC since, as good as my Salons are now with the MC452, after a lot of listening, everyone in my family has come to the conclusion that we prefer using the sub (Velodyne Optimum 12) along with the Salon 2s. The added bass foundation is not subtle.

So the Bryston and Krell are really the only options (Classe SSP800 is very good too, but it supposedly runs very hot, which i dont want).
