Unhappy Here we go again.....

Last night Smokey tore into the Misses just like what happened in 2012 ( http://www.audioaficionado.org/where...t-ape-h-t.html ). We cannot figure out what triggered it as nothing obvious happened. Yolanda went to sit in a chair and was putting her feet on the ottoman and covering them with a blanket when all hell broke loose. Cat was yowling, growing, claws in overdrive. I wasn't looking in their direction so I cannot say what actually happened.
Back in 2012 after the initial event the veterinarian put Smokey on Lorazepam and Fluoxetine which seemed to be effective. So fast forward to April of this year, Smokey got to the point where is wouldn't take his med's daily and after 5-6 days without the medication we decided to stop medicating him. In the first 2-3 days without med's he was pretty jumpy and skiddesh but after a few more days he seemed to calm down. Our concern all along was that using the medication for too long could harm his liver and/or kidneys and since he was refusing the med's we thought we'd see what would happen. So since about the middle of April all has been fine and the only behavioral change had been occasional marking inside the house (he's always kept indoors) and he would no longer jump in my lap and sleep like he once did. All that was and is fine as long as his health wasn't an issue.
At this point I've put him back on his medication, managed to give him his prescribed dose about an hour after the outburst. After we patched Yolanda up she stayed in our bedroom and closed the door while I remained in to observe Smokey. Later that evening I joint by batter bride and went to bed not letting Smokey into the room. He spent the what seemed like the entire night meowing and pawing at the door. This morning all was calm (and still is), he's been sleeping just a few feet from me just about all day. He even hopped into my lap and tried to curl up but I wasn't, at this point, comfortable with that. As I've said I've no real idea what triggered this event but I feel I'm responsible

Don.......This is certainly strange and vicious feline behavior. The unpredictable nature of the attacks is scary. You have gone farther with Smokey than I would, but then it's not my cat. The second physical attack tells me there's probably more to come. If I were your wife, I would be frightened of the cat. I am surprised she doesn't insist the cat be banished from your home.

Don,

I am so sorry to even be typing this (I have cats and cringe typing this), but you have to intervene.

Don, as much as I love my cat, if something like this ever happened where he attacked my wife or myself, we would part ways. Animals that viciously attack can not be trusted. Twice??? What if he goes for the face and eyes next time?

Don are there meds that control that sort of thing, how odd, so sorry! Could it be diet or something too maybe?

But as all the others say family comes 1st, even though you kitty is family.

In a choice between a wife and a cat, the wife wins all the time.

The cat needs to go.

Pets that attack their owners cannot be trusted.

Sometimes it's only a matter of playing with the cat(s) for 20 minutes during day and during night, allowing the cat to release some energy by making him tired.

And the cat will be happier too.

Laser and things that make him run and jump will definitely help.

It's been a little over four years since the original incident and I had stopped giving him his med's near the end of March this year. Needless to say, at least for now, he's back on his med's. And while I agree human safety comes first my wife is the one who is against any further action. I am trying to reason with her about it but she's pretty hard headed.
