whats the difference?
Is there supposed to be an audible difference between ("Digital" audio) tosLink fiberOptic AudioQuest OptiLink 1 vs. coax (rca) Monster cables. I have connected each way but don't notice a difference. (should I be using a 75 s/p diff cable) instead of a standard rca cable?
There must be or they wouldn't make it "right"? |

Yes, if you're using a SPDIF connection you want a 75ohm connector. Most decent quality composite video cables and better are 75ohm. The WW Starlight digital coax cable is excellent for the money and the Silver Starlight takes you to a whole nother level. A 1m Starlight is about $80 retail and SS is about $250 retail. From the looks of your system though you'll really be able to tell the difference between the two.

You can run a super long Toslink cable without worries of RF Interference.
I have a question. What's the difference between a Digital Coax and Componet Video cable? There both 75 ohms cable.

What type of audible difference do you think I would hear? in your opinion. with the 75ohm digital coax vs. toslink? there about the same price.
1m starlight 6 approx. $80 1m AQ OptiLink 1 $80 toslink fiber optic. Why is the 75ohm rca coax a better choice? less RFI, better sound quality? I don't understand, im quite ignorant in this area. I just know they offer both. There must be some type of positive and negative to each cable. Can you please clarify? Feel free to jump in Ivan. Just asking for Opinions. |

I've never heard difference, but have never made a really long run, so cannot comment on that aspect.

Digital signals unlike analog are not subject to the same kind of distortion. Some may disagree but it is tough to hear a difference between toslink and coax for digital; I have both . Glass toslink is supposed to be better than plastic ones; both have to be treated with more care than coax as the fibers in the cable can crack or break which will impair the transfer of the digital information. For this reason especially I would not recommend that you buy a used toslink.

If you want a GREAT glass optical cable, buy a Apogee Wyde Eye optical digital. I got mine for $60 off ebay. One thing to remember about optical cables is NOT to bend them, roll not fold.

Mike: Composite video cables have 75 ohm connectors. Component video cables are just 3 composite video cables transfering your video. Composite video will transfer up to 480i I believe while you can transfer HD through Component video. HDMI keeps it in the digital realm instead of analog. For digital audio you use the toslink, 75ohm Digital cable (Composite), ATT, etc..
Personally I've always liked the 75ohm cables vs the toslink. One reason is the connection. The cheesy plastic connectors on the back of CD Players, DVD Players, Proccessors, DAC, etc.. for the toslink just suck in my opinion. My Supernova's that I use off of my PS3 and SAT Box wants to tear that adpater out lol. Also, my ears hear more dynamics from a coax vs. toslink. I sold WW for almost 6yrs and have owned it longer. Through the many demos and blind tests I've done for myself and clients the coax won maybe 90% of the time. The Starlight is an exceptional cable for the money. The Silver Starlight & Gold Starlight are amazing (never heard the Platinum) and will make a dramatic difference in a surround sound system. You'll notice things in movies you've never heard before. Even my wife could hear the difference when I brought my first Gold Starlight home. One thing I always tried to do as a salesman (I'm not in the audio business anymore) was give people the best for their money. If you have $120 to spend on a Supernova toslink, buy a Starlight digital cable and a Stratus power cord for a few bucks more. Your system will never sound better. So in conclusion: Coax pros: Better connection, more dynamics & little details in surround systems, more bang for your buck IMHO Toslink cons: Crappy connection & over priced Hope this helped, Matt |
