Actually, if a DX only lens is used on D700/D3/D3x, the camera will switch to DX mode so you don't get tunnel vision-like pictures.
I think this page helps explain the difference between the FX and DX lenses.

That is a good explanation. However, back to Ivan's new lens, it appears that Nikon does not designate it as a "DX" lens.

My wife is commisioned to take some super macro picks of an ancient vase for an archeologist with her D3x. They are trying to prove/expose a very detail map that is supposable on this vase. She has spoken with many different experts on how to get this shot. One was an engineer that helped design the Hubble Telescope. His opinion was to use a 20mm macro lens with an extension between the camera and the lens. Only thing I can figure is that an extension would put the lens closer to the subject and still focus. Problem is, of course it puts the lens further from the sensor in the camera.
Any one have any experience with this? They are trying to zoom in 64th of an inch.

Ivan,

That is a great macro lens. If you want the maximum benefit of it, get yourself a Nikon R1C1 Ring flash.

I use the lens and flash daily to take pictures during surgery and post autopsies.

Get yourself a bellows kit. The longer the bellows the greater the magnification but your depth of field is almost non-existent so you need to shoot at F32! It is a great producer of headaches!

I'd bet there's been some pretty grody images through that rig. Very nice, BTW.

Take a look at howiebrou's camera with bellows- you need a longer focal length to get high magnification. You can also use tele-extenders to artifically create longer focal ratios intead of the bellows attachment.
When I take photos of the sun with my telescope the f- ratio is f30- FYI.
Make sure that your using top quality ED glass for the sharpest possible imaging/photo's- you don't want any false color ruining your pictures. Lighting is also very important so make sure your covered on that end as well. A tripod to steady your camera will also be needed for those high mag pictures, pick a heavy duty one in case you haven't already.
