I prefer mono recordings over the "electronically re-channeled for stereo" garbage. That said, if the recording was originally recorded and mastered in stereo, I prefer that version.

With the right mastering Mono can sound amazing with great depth and definition. As always the mastering has more to do with it the actual format mono or stereo. I have many albums in mono and stereo and in some cases the mono sounds better where in others the stereo version sound better.

Here is nice bit of vinyl to capture the essence of "filthy mono"

I have two tables in the main rig, and one is strictly for mono recordings. They are much more live sounding than most of my stereo recordings. I use a Modified TD150/Jelco 750d/AudioTechnica AT33Mono Ltd. Edition combination.

I've never really paid attention to mono albums as 99% of my albums are in stereo and I didn't grew up with mono (any kind including the disease )
Maybe I should try with a good mastering. Any jazz album do you recommend ? |

I have a bunch of mono recordings. Some sound really great, some less so. I can say the same for stereo. I don't really care so much about the mono vs. stereo debate. It's the mastering that counts; not the number of channels.
Monos can be better than early stereo for the very simple reason that mastering techniques for stereo were all over the map and some were very bizarre, like putting Beatle's voices in one channel and instrumentals in the other, or putting everything in dead left and dead right channels with nothing mixed into the middle.
