Mono-mania
Anyone else here digs mono recordings? I have a few mono albums that sound amazing. Sometimes there is the appearance of even more depth than in some stereo recordings. Perhaps it's because they were recorded in the days where tubes were the only option, but most mono recordings - especially jazz - sound delicious to me.
I also like that I don't have to worry about sitting in the right place and I am not distracted by stereo and soundstage "tricks". I notice this several times when listening to, believe it or not, a little Tivoli desktop radio. It has a huge rolloff at higher frequency, a bumped middle bass to make up for lower octave extension ... and yet, I find myself stopping what I am doing and listening a heck of a lot more than when I am listening to my stereo. Go figure. I might wire my Shindo to bi-amp one Tannoy and listen in mono for a while to see what happens. Any other mono-maniacs out there? Alberto |

The Beatles used to release some of their albums in mono first, then they would release a stereo version which never sounded as good to me. Mono kicks butt!

There's much more to it than many people realize. Wayne Garcia wrote a review in the late 90s of Ella's Clap Hands - Here Comes Charlie, comparing the original mono, original stereo, and the modern re-issue (Acoustic Sounds I think). It's the most insightful piece I've ever seen on how perspectives of the artist and the recording team change as they move away from the moment. Just emailed Wayne to find a link to the article.
(And yes the mono wins hands down. There's much more to music than 180gs) |

Especially if you have the whole mono setup.... A good mono cart is essential.

Well my childhood was 30 years or so after mono, but I'm with you. My recordings are mono wherever possible and I also have a Shindo dedicated mono phono preamp in addition to my ONE channel dedicated mono system. Mostly 78s there.
