I don't know if the GS is going for the Reference series per se.

Yes it is a more stylized look vs the industrial looking Reference series (which I love btw).

But in terms of functionality, there's a lot more integration. The integrated sports a DAC and a phono preamp. The preamp also includes a phono preamp and headphone amp. These are IMHO very different design goals than the Reference series - which are do one thing and do it supremely well boxes.

The sound character as I understand it - is also different. The GS has a less "tube" glow sound vs the Reference 5SE based on a friend's experience. I don't know if the Ref6 will follow in that same direction - but if I were ARC, I'd just keep refining the Reference series to do what it always does but better. And use the Galileo to explore an alternative line/direction.

IMHO.

There's a reason why Porsche doesn't just make one range of cars. And they are all good. But different.

I agree, MPS. I've been an ARC owner since the days of the D76A. Really. And I've owned a string of ARC products since. When I look at my Ref 5SE, I can see in it hints of the SP-8, which was my first ARC preamp. I've had nothing but ARC preamps since then.

The appearance of the new G series style just leaves me cold. I hope the gear sounds great because, after all, that's what really counts. And perhaps the lack of a black faceplate option on the G-type style prejudices me, because that's long been my preference.

It's odd that ARC and McIntosh are now owned by the same corporate parent, because their styling approaches couldn't be more different! Mac has held to the traditional Mac look even as its products evolve. ARC seems to want to reinvent the wheel.

Obviously they must feel ARC customers are more open to change than MAC customers.

According to the latest ARC newsletter, it states that many of its' customers have asked them to make their products more refined and less lab/industrial looking.

I am not liking the looks of the G series myself. I prefer the industrial lab look of their products which was standard for the past 35 years -esp the meters on the VT-130SE, 150SE, Ref 300, Ref 600 amps. The SP3 style knobs on the new G series look a bit like the knobs off a 60s receiver and are not to my liking. But everyone has a different taste, it just isn't my cup of tea.

You mean ref75, the 150 has no meters.

I meant the VT150SE monoblocs from the mid 90s.

ARCDB - VT150

Yes, I did forget the Ref75s.
