Cigars vs Cigarettes
I have noticed that when I am around cigarette smoke , I get a really bad allergic reation. With Cigars I don't seem to have any problems.. I smoke but I did not inhale.... I have never smoked cigarettes but when I am in close proximity My eyes itch.....I start to wheeze and cough....nose gets plugged up?Does this happen to anybody else ? I wonder if it is the paper?

I have never smoked a single cigarette or cigar in my life. I avoid cigarette and cigar smoke like it was the plague. In fact, considering death rates from lung cancer, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart attacks and other smoking related heart disease, smoking IS a high mortality plague. It never ceases to amaze me how intelligent, well educated people that smoke justify ignoring all the research and warning signs that clearly demonstrate the tremendous health hazards associate with the addictive habit.

My guess would be that it's all the chemicals they put into cigarettes that are not in cigars.

While I quit smoking cigarettes over 15 years ago, I will enjoy the occasional Cigar (Monte Cristo #2) with a snifter of Cognac from time to time. I tend to be a recluse when I do out of respect for others though.
Regards, Jim

I have to say that I agree 100% with jdandy and Douglax. The smell and smoke of anything burning really bothers me. The closest you can get to my house with anything smoking is the porch and I will leave the door and windows closed. I haven't lit a fire in the fireplace during the last couple of decades either. In fact, the firebox and wood storage space in the fireplace is boarded up with a beautiful Brazilian Cherry panel because my speakers are in front of what used to be the wood-burning fireplace because we wouldn't want those lovely sounding mylar diaphragms melting from the heat.
That leaves two other vices. Drinking is fine, especially when it is a fine wine, special scotch or very fine rum. To protect myself from those, all I have to do is leave my kitchen knives in the block, stay away from my cars and not play with any shop tools in the basement. No comment on the third vice. As a health care professional, I would encourage all AA members to NOT smoke. I've seen too many preventible complications from it. Don't know if Cigar is any better, but definitely not cigarette!

Smoking IS healthy
I think smoking is healthy... for the budget of the community
On the average, a smoker's life is 7-10 years shorter. That means 7 to 10 years less retirement to pay for the government. 50% of health costs in a person's life are spent in his last year (!), so that doesn't make a big difference between smokers and non-smokers for health insurance. And smokers pay a hell lot of taxes on their cigarettes too...

In 50 years, we are all dead anyways...
I have seen Dan and I am being generous. You're one bad oyster away from the sky-box. Enjoy a Cigar! Light your Fire place, and Grill a steak. They will all cause you cancer! On any time line, your survival rate reaches zero. Ask Jim Fix, who authored the Joy of Running. Rip.@50 years old. |
