Just an update on this - my son was fiddling with the buttons on the preamp and apparently I was under-driving the input.

When I set the gain properly, the single Classic 1 mkiii has more than enough oomph to drive the Cremona Auditor Ms. Just setting the volume to 7 starts to fill the room nicely so that people can just barely converse.

Moving the the volume to 12 quickly shuts them up so I can concentrate on the music!
