What Classical Music Are You Listening To Tonight?
Richard Strauss, Rued Langgaard
Langgaard: Prelude to Antichrist; R. Strauss: An Alpine Symphony Seattle Symphony, Thomas Dausgaard conducting Seattle Symphony Media (2019), 24/96 files Excellent performance of the Alpine - I think Dausgaard will be a worthy successor to Morlot for Seattle - and the Langgaard “Prelude to Antichrist” is a gorgeous piece. Now I’ll have to play the full Antikrist that Bart and Kal were going on about last year[emoji846]

Bach: Cello Suites
Rachel Podger, violin Channel classics (2019), via Qobuz Light and lively, well played, excellent sound, but much as I enjoy most of Podger’s recordings, I just can’t warm up to this one. Had I never heard this music before, I think it would be different, but these suites are long-time favorites, and having heard the passion of Schiff, Starker, Casals, Rostropovich, Fischer, etc., on the cello, I can’t disassociate the music from the instrument.

I agree totally Tony. Played by a viola, it's already better, but the violoncello (da spalla) is the way to go.

Rautavaara - Vigilia
Helsinki Chamber Choir, Nils Schweckendiek Qobuz 24/96 Fascinating choir music from end of last century. This goes on my wish list to buy the surround recording.

DSD128 iterations of Kenneth Wilkinson-engineered 1969 recordings. Both works are energetic, each in its own way (and conducted accordingly), but their moods differ, with the symphony as the "darker" of the two. Superbly recorded by the Decca team originally for RCA release in the U.S. Previn's at the top of his game here, especially in the symphony.
