Purcell died in Nov 1695, Queen Mary II in Dec 1694, so it is possible it was for this queen he wrote the funeral music...

Listening to more Tchaikovsky . . .

Zubin Mehta Tchaikovsky
Symphony No. 5 in E minor

Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra - Zubin Mehta, Conductor

I think I may have said it before, but I think Z. Mehta leading the LA Philharmonic could make Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star sound exciting. Well, he certainly works wonders with this Tchaikovsky. The performance is excellent and this recording is splendid.

Returning once again to the "Oud Katholieke Kerk" (Old Catholic Church) in Haarlem:

Händel - Organ Concertos Nos. 7, 9, 10 & 12 - Volume III

I love this series!
The remastered quadrophonic recording sounds remarkably good.

Ending this evening with a Flemish composer:

Lodewijk Mortelmans - Perels

Really beautiful songs of the "Flemish Brahms". Well sung (in my mother tongue) and played.

Lodewijk Mortelmans - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mortelmans was a student of my (great great grand) uncle, Peter Benoit.

After reading about Gerard Schurmann's Piano Concerto in the new John Ogdon biography, I realized that I hadn't listened to his Violin Concerto in ages (the Piano Concerto remains unrecorded, although one is apparently in the works from Chandos). Nice piece. He skillfully manages to avoid making the violin fight to be heard over the orchestra. Good, if typically distant Chandos sound.

My Marantz would be rather pricey, too!

What an amazing lineup of musicians! They certainly turn in impassioned performances of wonderful music--the Piano Quintet and Piano Trio. Typical multi-mic'd DG studio sound.

You are exactly correct. I was confusing Tallis with Purcell. Thank you.

Yes, actually Purcell composed an anthem and two elegies for Queen Mary II's funeral. (or at least so sez Wikipedia)
