PNY USB Drive and BDP2

I have noticed that every time I try to play music on the PNY USB drive, the music has significant dropouts throughout every song. However, when I revert to a Scandisk USB drive, the dropouts stop. Has anyone else noticed this fact?

Not all flash memory is created equal. I would assume your PNY has a lower grade speed rating of the actual flash memory chips (not the USB rating) vs. the Scandisk and is not fast enough to keep the buffers full.

I don't know. The PNY certainly does not "flash" like the Scandisk yet cost about the same price.

As mentioned, not all flash drives are created equal. Try Sandisk Extreme II, the higher end Lexars... even PNY should be fine if you use their higher end drives. Sites like Amazon and BH Photovideo show the read write speeds of many of the flash drives they sell. I’ve been using Lexars and Sandisk Extremes with files up to 192/24 with no problem.

Well, you've been forewarned about PNY. My post is just a warning. I have about three PNY USB drives; all with the same problem.

That’s pretty extreme, how fast can you copy the files off the drive to your computer? I wonder if you got a bad bunch of pny thumb drives? Or it could just be a compatibility issue with that drive. Are they all the same model? Bought at the same time?

Chris, I really cannot say how fast I copy files. All I can say is I use the same method on iTunes; from my storage drive to the USB drive. I notice that none of the PNY drives light up like the Scandisk drives. In the past, I have sent my BDP2 back to Bryston due to the dropouts or skipping. I have isolated the fault to the PNY drives as all causes dropouts or skipping in music. I am only posting this as a warning for others. I have even reformatted the PNY drives, but the problem was the same.

By the way, my thread is not a complaint against the BDP2, but rather just for information purposes alone.

Do you have the latest firmware in your BDP2? It could be an issue with the unit. I have seen that happen before (with other products).

You mean 2.36? PNY did this in the previous software version. Perhaps the PNY drives are not true flash drives as they don't blink whereas all my Scandisk USB drives have a light that blinks either blue or red. I have no problems with my BDP2.
