I bought a used PSE with IIPS. I understand that the amp has solid state rectification. So, what is the function of the rectifier tube and does the voltage change when, for example, a 5U4G instead of a 5Y3G is used?

BTW, EL84's sound quite good in it.

The rectifier tube is now used in the IIPS. It is used as a vacuum buffer between the B+ and the regulated PS.

I own an early PSE, the last one before the IIPS. It had KT88s and a 5AR4. Dennis announced the IIPS and I immediately (within one week) sent it back for the upgrade. He added a SS rectifier, rewired the tube rectifier to act as a DC-DC rectifier between the B+ and the regulated PS. It uses the tubes vacuum to buffer the regulated PS from surges in B+ voltage under load. Conversely, the rectifier tube buffers the B+, giving it some tube rectifier sound.

The primary benefit of the IIPS is the stabilization of the screen grid PS. Dennis asserted that instability in this PS can cause parasitic distortion in the tube output. He did not feel that this was as necessary in triodes.

6L6's sound excellent too. I used 6L6GA's with a 5Y3G rectifier.

Learning from other members, FloridaBoy truly knows his tube combinations.

I'm trying some of FloridaBoys tubes now with other amps yielding great results.
