Hello All,
New member but long long time lurker, about 2 years! This website has been a great resource for me to gather opinions about equipment I dreamed I would one day be buying.

Well 'one day' is coming, as now I have the wife's blessing! I've sold some of my mid-fi setup that has served me well over the last few years in anticipation of upgrading to something that will (hopefully) be the last system I ever put together. I know...probably not likely until they invent a cure for upgraditis.

Since I've read so many posts and ate up a lot of http traffic, I'd figure I might as well become a subscriber. Ahh who am I kidding...I HAD to see what is for sale in the private sale forum. Some good deals going on there, not to mention I would feel safer dealing with some of you then eBay/Audiogon.

A little more about me and my setup...

I am 25 years old, recently married, and just a month ago, I purchased a home in Boca Raton, FL after almost a year of searching. I had to find a house that had everything I would need for a long time to come. Needless to say, it had to have a nice listening room as well. My dimensions are 14x19 with vaulted ceilings, from 9 to 13 feet. Not the best listening area but it will have to do for now.

My first introduction to hifi was a Front Row Center in Coral Springs, FL. I came in looking for a 5.1 setup for movies, I left totally baffled by what a good 2 channel setup can achieve. The store owner is Elliot Goldman. He had just got in a pair of Grand Veena speakers he was running in and insisted that I hear them. I was coming in to listen to some Paradigm 5.1 setup.

The Grand Veenas were setup in a dedicated listening room with acoustic treatments all around, and the room size was approximately 20x20. The preamp I believe was a McIntosh C2200, the amps were monoblock McIntosh MC2301. Source was PerfectWave DAC/Transport.

Un-freaking-believable what that system achieved. It had totally demolished my idea of what was possible with 2 channel stereo. The system was lifelike, I felt like I was in the front row of a concert of whatever music was being played. It sounded more 'surround' than a 5.1 setup! I could go on and on with compliments but I'll stop there. Suffice it to say, I was bitten by the bug.

This was about 3 years ago. Now, after I'm married and have a house, I have a few dollars stashed away to hopefully get a used pair of Grand Veenas. My concern is that they may overpower my listening room, but I'm willing to take the chance anyway.

Other speakers I have considered are the Harbeth SHL5 which I heard last week with a Leben CS300XS (amazing combo) and possibly a Tannoy Kensington which I've never heard, but from what I've read I think I will enjoy it and it would work alright in my room.

Anways, thanks for making it this far in my post. I look forward to posting in the forums. See you around!

Also, below is a picture of my listening room. For anyone who's heard the Grand Veenas, Let me know if you think they might be overpowering. Thanks again!

CFz - Grand Veenas are remarkable speakers and are one of the nicest ways to go into the high end at a cost that, while a lot of money, are very realistically priced. Many have said that they are the equal of many speakers costing 4 or 5 times their price.

Congratulations on your research and on finding this great speaker.

A 14 X19' room should handle them very well, especially with the vaulted ceilings.

I've listened at length to the Grand Veenas and have read glowing reviews. They are great speakers!

Have you decided yet on your electronics?

Congratulations on the new wife, the new house, the great room for listening, and for joining us here on AA.

Julian

Hi Julian,
Thanks for welcome. I hope the Grand Veenas do work in my room. Since I'm planning on getting a used pair, it should be an incredible value.

Unfortunately things have hit a snag...I no longer have my wife's blessings at the moment. The deal was if I sold my current audio equipment and did not dip into our checkings/savings, she would be alright with the speakers. Well, she probably didn't think I would be able to pull it off but I have. I sold some of my home theater setup which consisted of Definitive Technology towers. I also sold some vintage receivers that I collected over the years in addition to some newer integrated receivers.

Now I have amassed the funds for the Grand Veenas, and now my wife thinks I'm crazy to spend 3-4k on a pair of speakers. I have not violated our agreement to not dip into the savings mind you, but she cannot fathom spending that kind of money on speakers and is daring me to do so

True there could be better timing, we just bought a house that needs some work. But, I never would have sold any of my current setup if I didn't think I could get something better! I see now that this was a misconception from the beginning to make me sell my speakers and, with the money, invest them into new floors or furniture instead of buying Veenas. Oh the joys of marriage

I'm still working on her, but it doesn't look promising. I think I may need to buy a puppy on the same day the Grand Veenas arrive.

If I get lucky enough to my wife's blessings for the Veenas, for the time being it will be used with a vintage Luxman R-1120 receiver which has been restored. It's a very warm, sweet, almost tube sounding solid state. The source would be the Sony PS1 or Audio GD Reference One DAC.

One day if funds permit, I would like to try the Veenas with the Leben CS600 or a Shindo preamp/amp combo.

In the meantime, I'll peruse the forums for tips on how to handle and work around the WAF.
