Yes,

exactly as I thought.

I thought with the digital jacks on the back I could add an external DAC on the Foundation 4K for two channel?

Was thinking of a Chord in the future.

An external DAC would get connected to either Balanced Analog Inputs or Single-ended Analog Inputs on the Foundation.

Hello,

I see why I was confused by what I read on this thread.
The post was about the Foundation not having digital output.
I got my ins and outs reversed.

So in analog pre amp mode I can by pass internal DAC?
can I find this function by cycling through the mode list?

Just looked at the foundation brochure and one the front page it shows a photo of the Foundation display showing Analog Preamp mode.

When I purchased the foundation,
I had full intention of adding an external DAC for analog in the future.

This info is in the manual — PREAMP
Select Preamp mode for listening to analog stereo signals with the Foundation 4K UHD operating as an analog stereo preamplifier. Preamp mode bypasses the Foundation 4K UHD’s digital circuitry and sends signals from the balanced or single-ended inputs directly to the analog stereo outputs.

Perfect!

I find the manual confusing at times.

Am going to read it again.

Am very pleased that the Foundation can do what I wanted it to do.

I think with a good quality DAC for two channel audio it will be perfect!

It is working quite well now for my AV system.

Most appreciated

Hello Ron,

I understand now why you know so much about the Foundation.
Looks like you own one.

I got a very good deal and I jumped on it.
Thought it would go well with my HTS amplifier.

Wanted to run something by you that my dealer friend just told me.
I am quoting here,
There is not a good way to utilize an outboard DAC with the Foundation since it does not have a post decode output.
There would be noise and volume issues that can not be controlled.

From my understanding,
the foundation does not have the proper input to take advantage of a High End DAC.
Now I see why some people on this form keep mentioning PS Audio as an example.
Due to the fact that they are set up for this.
They have Direct Stream.

Please let me know what you think?
Would hate to purchase an external DAC and find out it does not improve SQ in Analog stereo mode.

Ps,
Sorry for the pun,
would still like to be able to get it to work in pre amp mode.
It only seems to come up in CD mode.
I am not getting any signal there.
Think this has something to do with the way the sources have been previously been set up.
Time to read the manual once again.

Any digital input — HDMI Input, Optical Digital Inputs, or Coaxial Digital Inputs, uses the Foundation's DAC chipset.
Any analog input — XLR Balanced Analog Inputs, or RCA Single-ended Analog Inputs, uses the attached components signal. So if you attach an external DAC via analog output to the Foundation analog input, you would be using that external DAC's chipset.

If you connect your external DAC to the Balanced Analog inputs and select Bal in your setup menu for the named source — Analog Preamp will then display on the Foundation when you select that source.

Before you buy an external DAC always try to get a trial period to see if you like. Many dealers offer that.

Best of Luck!

Ron

Hello Ron,

Thank you again for your outstanding support!

I am using an Oppo 203.
Feel like I should have purchased a 205 instead.
Did not know at the time what I was going to do with my system in the future.

Anyway,
I like your idea if auditioning an external DAC.
I am sure my dealer has few different options for me to try out.
Since I have no Balanced analog on the Oppo,
I assume I can use single ended in set up menu for the source?

What do you think of the SQ from the analog internal DAC in the Foundation?

For now,
I am going to work on being able to switch between internal DAC and the one in the Oppo.
Analog pre amp mode still seems to be only coming up in CD mode.
But I get no signal.
Only signal through HDMI.
Still think it has something to do with the way the previous owner had it programmed.

The digital inputs including HDMI sound very good in the Foundation and its easy to implement a sub.

I don't believe the Analog Preamp setting uses the sub.

Input settings can be changed in the on screen display menu.

A variety of audio modes can be applied to digital and analog signals.

Sonic enjoyment if different for people and is influenced by ones room acoustics, needs, components, and likes.

It's only important that you enjoy the sound and not what components you have.
