I seriously doubt the cap was defective, I'd bet my 33 yrs experience as a tech would find circuit voltages too close to the cap's max rated voltage or it's installed wrong polarity/backwards.

The broken capacitor is part of a bank of several polystyrene non polar .01uF 600V capacitors in parallel for bypassing purposes. The mains electrolytic are of 450V and the REF40 tubes operates its 6h30 tubes with stabilized 180V . Do you still want me to get the screwdriver and the voltmeter?

Sure !!! to be safe I would still measure the p/s voltage. With the information you have posted the safety factor of the cap in question should be adequate. You may be correct, just a bum part.

Dealer took it to repair, with genuine part and they also said the bottom plate can be removed like you said.
So it is in a good hand now. They bring Mcintosh c45 for me to use temporarily while waiting.

Toga,

Glad you are being taken cared of by the dealer. Hope the Ref 40 is fixed quickly.

Elberoth,

Did you hear about the new Shunyata signal cables? Although the detail of the photo was low and I can be mistaken, it seemed me they were being used at the Sonus Faber factory with Audio Research gear.

Toga, FYI, the same problem occurred with my previous ref 5 when 3 .01uf white multicap bypass caps self destructed with a crackling high pitched pop. Like your ref 40, the my preamp kept playing but the sound changed for the worst, coarser, harder and brighter. This sonic aberration I clearly heard in a one to one comparison with a replacement ref 5 loaned to me while mine was repaired. For your assurance, ARC supplies their dealers with the same high quality solder they use at the factory. If the parts are available, one day is enough to install and bench test your repaired unit.
