I use the same combo! I also have a larger Gitzo but it is so heavy I rarely use it.

May I also recommend the Novoflex line.

I use their Miniconnect quick release which is supremely robust and very easy to use with one hand. I have used it for 10 years and still rate it as the best quick release. Just buy one of those metal discs for each camera body and big lens and you're set!

I also use their magicball ball head which has a larger grip which suits my hand somewhat better than the Gitzo.

Their stuff is not cheap but it is very good quality. You won't be disappointed.

Like all photography stuff though, you really need to handle it before buying to make sure it suits your own hand shape and size

Yes but you should get the head without the built in quick release then you just screw the mini connect onto the top of the ball head like you would a camera if no quick release was in use.



You can always try it with your existing ball head but you will have two quick releases in use!

Alternatively order the Magic Ball and Mini connect and keep them as a pair to compare with your gitzo pairing.

Masterlu - I bought a Gitzo metal tripod and head in about 1984, and while it is heavy by today's standards, and has had a LOT of use, it is absolutely as good as new. Wonderful craftsmanship and design. The head is an old style Gitzo three handle job which looks impressive and is actually a joy to use.

I use the Gitzo around the house and when I don't have to carry it very far.

Must admit that I bought a Bogen/Monfrotto carbon fiber tripod and Arca Swiss ball head for general use (because it was a bunch cheaper than the carbon fiber Gitzo) I do like the flip type leg locks on the Manfrotto, but the ones on the Gitzo are also easy to use and have never failed in 25 years of use.

I have a Tiltall Professional tripod model #4602 in black, manufactured by E. Leitz, Inc. of Rockleigh, New Jersey.

It's great and should last a lifetime!!


The Tiltall Tradition

From 1946 to 1973, the Tiltall production remained in the hands of the Marchioni brothers. Production was purposely limited to allow the brothers an opportunity to personally supervise and control all steps in the production cycle and assure a product of consistent quality. The files of the brothers are filled with letters of testimonial to the quality and superb performance of the Tiltall tripod demonstrating the success of this approach. Also, in spite of virtually no budget for advertising, Tiltall’s fame spread and the orders for new tripods far exceeded the brothers’ ability to produce them—even in the leanest years of our economy.

Tiltall and Leitz

Early in 1973, Gene Anderegg, from E. Leitz, Inc., in Rockleigh, New Jersey, who had known of the Tiltall for many years, contacted the Marchionis to discuss a possible affiliation. Leitz had an enviable reputation in the scientific world as the builder of the highest quality microscopes, and in the photographic world as the creator of the famous Leica 35mm system of photography.

The Marchionis felt that the time was right to retire and had been searching for someone to carry on the tradition they had established with such great care. The result, the Leitz reputation was enough proof for the Marchionis and a deal was consummated. And so, the tripod works were moved from Rutherford, New Jersey, to Rockleigh, New Jersey, where the Marchionis personally trained the staff now carrying on the work that began because a loving father gave his son a camera.
