You don't think that it is something that will improve with break in? Perhaps different tubes?

TSWisla.......Perhaps different tubes would make a difference. Were I to consider the PrimaLuna DiaLogue HP integrated amplifier, I would purchase it with KT120 tubes, not the EL34's. First and foremost, I would want the additional power, 90 watts per channel versus 70 watts per channel. The second reason is the KT120 has gotten fantastic customer reviews for its sound, specifically solid deep bass, liquid smooth midrange and top end. Everyone has their own preference and that is mine.
You did not say whether the PL DiaLogue HP is on loan as a demo or you own it. Either way, to experiment with KT120 tubes, and you will need eight of them, you are looking at approximately $400.00 to purchase them. That would be quite an expense for an amplifier you don't own just to make the comparison with EL34 tubes. If you own the DiaLogue HP, then it might be something to consider. Different tubes might be the turning point in your decision making process.

I am demoing the HP. I really love my xa, but I have heard so many great things about the PL that I don't want to make a hasty decision that I will regret.

The EL34s gave a beautiful midrange but it doesn't quite deliver the bass slam of the KT120s. If bass is what you are looking for, try the KT tubes. The 88 I thought had a bit more slam and punch than the 34, but wasn't as rich in the midrange as the 34. The 120 felt to me the best of both worlds. I'm using PrimaLuna branded KT120 silver grade.

What can you compare the HP to solid state wise?

Lots of nice things said here about the KT120's. What about the KT150's? Even a bit more power and the reviews I've read have been extremely positive. Anyone here tried them?

Please share your experience with us. What amp did you own before the PL?

I currently own the ModWright KWI-200...a very nice integrated. I have been wanting to go back to tubes and have a headphone section. What really sold me on the PL is the autobias and ability to use multiple different tube types. I owned a Cary integrated in the past and although it sounded great, it was hard on tubes and I had to keep on top of the biasing. The PL does not push the tubes too hard so should not require the fuss the Cary amp did.
The amp should be here tomorrow...
