Hello,

I'm looking to replace my TungSol 6550 with some KT88. Firstly inclined for Gold Lion. Now with these Mullard's...

I want to give this discussion a bump as I'm currently looking to upgrade to my MC275 VI power tubes. Considering the following:

*GL KT88 reissues
*Mullard KT88 reissues
*Tung Sol 6550 reissues
*Tube Store Preferred Series KT88 (same as Penta SC's with triple getters)

Any comments?
Wes

JWH.......I was very pleased with the Gold Lion KT88 power tubes in three MC275's that I owned. I also tried Penta, as well as the stock McIntosh (Electro-Harmonic) KT88. The Gold Lion's sound superior in my amps. I am currently using 16 Gold Lion KT88 power tubes, eight each in my two McIntosh MC2301 power amplifiers. Very nice sound.

Wow, those 2301's are hungry.

Interesting point, my amp was produced in October 2015 & has JJ KT88's according to my dealer. Sounds like McIntosh has used a few different KT88 over the last several years.

The other thing I've noticed is that there are few different configurations of getters on KT88's as well. Mine have no side getters. How did you like the Pentas? As well as the GL's?

JWH.......I thought the Penta's were smoother sounding than the stock tubes, but the Gold Lions were able to outperform them, primarily with a more robust low frequency range and a clearer midrange presentation. Naturally, these are my impressions and may not parallel yours.

Yes, McIntosh Labs moved their McIntosh branded tube vendor to JJ Tubes a couple years ago.

I've seen so many Mac owners that like the GL's I'm starting to get the message.

Still very curious about the 6550 reissues as well. Funny thing though, my wife doesn't think it's worth getting both to pick a winner ... Not sure why.

Always like the Tung-Sol 6550 tubes for their liquid mid-range (female voices). However, overall, I prefer the GL KT88s.

I assume you mean the re-issues. Better bottom end for the GL? Which sounded more powerful in your setup?
