Scoutmaster II
I enjoy music with this nice turntable and my new Benz Glider S L !
Please, I'd like to have a suggestion about the best way to change a record on my turntable. This turntable have a screw clamp, well... may I change the record without switch off the engine, or could be better switch off all the time? I think in both situation there is something not so good... Thank you ! Roberto |

Hi Roberto - When I had a VPI I used a non-screw clamp and found it to be as good as the screw-type that VPI offers. Much more convenient when changing sides or LPs. Always felt it was easier on the belt/motor when left running, which I did/do.

Thank you Glenn,
But.. actually, I'd like to use the original screw clamp. I think to remember that kind of clamp and the little gasket (small rubber disc), they have a sense for VPI.. They say it produce a sort of vacuum effect on the record, and could be different from another system... |

Roberto.......I have a threaded clamp on my Michell Gyro SE turntable. I would not think of trying to unscrew the clamp while the platter is spinning. Turn off the motor each time. Why take the chance of something getting out of control. If you are worried about the belt, keep a couple spare ones on hand.

I have been leaving the motor on, but I also don't screw down the clamp very tightly when putting a record on. I screw it down only to the point where it stops turning. I don't try to tighten it any further. When I'm taking a record off, I simply hold the screw and allow the turntable's spinning to unscrew it. I have a VPI HW-19 Mk.IV which is almost 23 years old, with the original motor. If you are going to turn it off, I would be deliberate when changing records. Turning the table off and on too rapidly isn't good in the long run, necessarily. Take your time. And I, too, think having an extra belt or two around is a good idea.

Yes Buck....
I can understand you, it's very uncomfortable changing the record, while the platter is turning. Actually, my doubts concern particularly about turning off the motor, so frequently, I think it's not so much healthy thing... |
