Thanks John....I'm certainly pleased with the DAC, and I'm sure it will continue to improve as it breaks in. It seemed to me that it almost had to be a winner, built around the same 32 bit ESS 9018 Quad balanced DAC chip that is used in other top contenders and in the original DAC-2.

Default The real fun has begun....

It is three weeks to the day since my new DAC-2 DSDse arrived, and I'm now beginning to hear some definite signs of the breaking-in and the beautiful changes that are coming with it. I've begun revisiting some of the selections that I evaluated it with when it first arrived, and what I'm hearing is really good. I would say that the already BIG sound is even bigger, the soundstage wider, and deeper. I'm also becoming more and more impressed with the bottom end, and overall "fullness to the sound.

Today, I spent a lengthy session spinning some of my better redbook CD recordings, some of which I hadn't listened to in a good while. Much of it was of the rock or classic genre, including The Doobie Brothers, Collective Soul, R.E.M., Toad the wet Sprocket, Blondie, The B-52's, and more.

Fabulous presentation in every case, and once again I just love the bottom end and mid-bass presentation. In fact, I was pretty blown away with this afternoon's session.

The Wyred 4 Sound DAC-2 DSDse is a winner. I'm beyond completely satisfied with the purchase, and I know the fun has only just begun.

Pete.......This is exciting news but not unexpected. I thinks there is even more to come. You are nowhere near the suggested 200 hour mark that the manual states as minimum brake-in. I think the DAC2 DSDse is going to continue to wow you as it settles into its permanent voice.

Great news!

Isn't it amazing how electronics have to "break in!" I am very pleased that your new W4S is meeting, and perhaps exceeding your expectations. This company keeps turning out very interesting products at very (for this hobby) reasonable price points.

Enjoy!

Pete, regarding your interest in my DAC-2 vs D100 comparison, I agree with your assessment that the Wyred DAC-2 DSD SE is a full bodied DAC that does a great job smoothing out bright sounding material. I find the McIntosh D100 has a different presentation of sound compared to the Wyred.

Overall, I find the D100 to have a thinner less robust sound. I wouldn't call the D100 bright, but it is definitely less forgiving than the Wyred on some material. However, on piano material such as Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, or Hiromi, I prefer the D100 as I feel it is closer to the real sound of a piano which can sometimes be bright. I felt the Wyred smoothed out some of the natural rawness of the piano. I also felt this was true with acoustic guitar material. I preferred vocals on the Wyred which provide Mark Knopfler and David Johansen with robust full voices which were a bit thinner sounding than I prefer on the D100. I think some may find the Wyred less fatiguing over extended listening sessions, but maybe not as true to the source as the D100.

I would say they are both great DACs with my preference being the Wyred for Rock and female vocals, and the D100 for piano and acoustic guitar. I think the Wyred really excelled on cymbals and drums, with the cymbals really sounding like cymbals instead of bacon frying and snare drums being crisp sounding. On the flip side the D100 when listening to Ottmar Liebert seemed to convey a sense of speed when running the scales that I didn't noticed as much with the Wyred.

As you can probably tell I seem to like them both and cannot figure out which one to keep, but in the end there can only be one so I will keep listening until I can decide. Enjoy!

jrsub.....these are very interesting comparisons. I don't recall at the moment-how long did you say you have owned your DAC-2 DSDse?

The DAC-2 DSDse is very definitely a VERY full-bodied and robust sounding DAC. I love it. I have listened to some piano pieces and thought it sounded excellent...though I haven't listened to a ton of piano material as yet.

Also, just curious what type of transport are you using?
