Like all the McIntosh MT series -- it's a Clear Audio TT & arm -- don't try to over guess it or out smart it -- buy the best Clear Audio cartridge your finances allow.

Best Sir,

Bob

declan09 .......Yes! Put the Dynavector XX2 on the MT5.....it would be a great match!..... It is vastly superior in all areas when compared to the stock Sumiko Blue Point No.2 that comes with the MT5

What are the weak points of MT5 after replacing the cartridge?

Weak points? Can't think of one. If I did not all ready have my VPI I would be giving serious consideration to the MT5. What's your cartridge budget? Of my cartridges I think the AT33 is the best 'bang for the buck' at just under $1K.

Are you guys crunching the numbers in terms of tonearm-cartridge resonance frequency, desired compliance? I'm asking because while the Dynavector XX2MKII is a fantastic cartridge (I owned it and it was mounted on SME20 with SME IV tonearm), the specs are kind of far off from the stock mentioned cartridge. If one is right for that MT5 tonearm, certainly the other is not...

I don't have MT5, but I am looking for a turntable. The MT10 is quite expensive. I am thinking if the MT5 is good enough after replacing the cartridge.

Hi, I am also curious about the MT5 with an upgraded cart. There is a recent review, end last year IIRC, where the reviewer replaced the stock cart with a Ortofon Cadenza Bronze ($2.3k). The reviewer loved the combination and stressed how important it is to remove the stock Blue Point No2 cart if you want to find out just how good the MT5 is. I used to own a MT10 with the stock cart and loved it. A friend has the MT10 with a Ortofon Winfield. I have read on a different forum of someone putting a top of the line Ortofon A95 ($6.5k) on the MT5 (!!!!!) and loved the combo. If it were me, I would either go with Ortofon or Clearaudio (concerto, Stradivari, or Da Vinci) on the MT5.

I have seen and heard McIntosh MT10 turntable, but I haven't heard MT5. I don't know how huge difference there is between MT5 and MT10, if you use good cartridge with MT5.

The price difference between MT5 and MT10 is quite big in Europe. McIntosh MT5 + Clearaudio Stradivari V2 + good cables is something like €3k cheaper than MT10 + stock cartridge + good cables + Clearaudio cover and it's more, if you add Clearaudio Stradivari V2 with MT10. It seems like McIntosh MT5 is a better deal.

I'm looking for a good and easy-to-use turntable for McIntosh system for occasional listening. My main thing is CD and SACD. I'm going to use a turntable with McIntosh C52 and I'm not planning to buy an external phono preamplifier.

I auditioned both and honestly did not hear that much of a difference. Certainly not $5,000 worth.

That said, my dealer gave me a great price on their demo MT-10 (with a new cartridge!) that greatly narrowed the price gap, so I went with it. Had this not been the case I would have bought the MT-5 and been perfectly happy with it, Sumiko cartridge and all.
