It amazes me what people will drop for gear, cables, racks, etc, but then reject limited run furniture prices. Not that i'm ready for 10k lp storage racks, (i'm using IKEA at the moment) but i certainly get where the $$ goes. Craftspeople put in the goods is where i'm coming from.
There was a boatload of R&D in the project. The original idea was to have boxes that hang on a metal flange on the wall. Nick built a prototype box and brought it over to my house. I filled it with records and handed it back to him. "Uh yeah, this isn't going to work." Lol, that's when we decided on standalone units and my wife said, as she is apt to say, "can they be mid-century?"

At that point the metal worker was brought in and we went down the Eames/mid-century modern rabbit hole. A year passed. Lots of meetings and lots of tweaking and bickering about form vs function.

I spoke to Nick, the lead designer today. He mentioned that I overpaid a lot in material due to the 5 box width. Apparently it is much more cost effective to go 4 wide due to the way the steel is sourced and the lengths available. He's going to meet with the metal worker sometime in the next week to discuss this and other ideas in order to come up with a ballpark production cost.

James, you could potentially have the boxes made in any type of wood. I forgot why we chose maple but I suspect my wife had a good reason

I have viewed tons of storage options on the web as well as in my collector friends' homes. All people have a different choice or solution. Also depending on the geographical needs, solutions may change. Expedit (Has a new name) is a solution for many people, however in earthquake prone areas, it is not a viable solution.

After reviewing everything, I came up with a design and material choice which I then got a carpenter to get the details done. It's 42x42x42cm cube with a holding space on the back side. Made out of Scandinavian birch plywood, the main material for quality boats. Thickness 15mm though I have to admit, 12mm would have also done the job. Chestnut finish was coated on top to give a natural color.

Here are 2 sample pics.

Excellent storage solution, looks exactly like the radio station library where I used to present at way back when vinyl was king. Good to know vinyl is having another coronation ☺
I think the thicker wood option was a good choice, there's a lot of weight on the bottom storage boxes when full to capacity.

You can google "cube shelves" and gives you a lot of option from various companies and stores.

What are you guys using to store your records?

Thanks,

Thank God I got my Expedits before the change. I have no idea what I would add if I had to switch. I have 6 of the 5x5s and 6 of the 1x5 that that I have stacked on top of the 5x5s. I estimate that this accommodates about 14,000 lps. I'm new here, so no pictures yet. Will post system/storage visuals when I am finally "approved."
