Schiit DACs do not support DSD playback of any kind, neither native or DoP. The designer does not believe in it being a significant format so their DACs only support PCM decoding.

Playing DSD on my Gungnir through Roon which converts DSD to PCM. Don't have much DSD to begin with and don't see myself ever amassing a large collection of DSD. Funny that PumaCat sent me a Loki DSD DAC from Schiit to play around with which is now discontinued from lack of interest but it sounds amazing for the laughable price that it used to be sold at.

I tried using the USB from the Sony and also got lousy sound and never got it to work right. I read somewhere that the USB connector can be finicky. And that is not on the Sony but USB in general. So I don’t even bother messing with it. That’s why my wish list includes more digital outputs.

Your view of USB is skewed. Out of "home audio" it is one of the best digital interfaces pure specs wise as compared to the AES3 (AES/EBU, Toslink, S/PDIF). The problem lies with the USB devices outputting not USB itself. There are other interfaces in the Pro-Audio that are better such as Thunderbolt, Firewire and a few others but so far they have not caught on with home audio. It all depends on your USB implementation/devices.

Aside from the DSD files not playing correctly on my DAC (converted to DoP from the HAP-Z1ES), all other file types sound great via USB output.

Thanks for the reminder, Schiit did offer the Loki DSD for a period of time. Their current DACs are PCM only so you can play DSD files if your server/player will convert them to PCM as you did via Roon.
