Philip Glass - The Glass Effect
Lavinia Meijer, harp

I don't know where this was recommended (I guess our Glass expert Ed?).
Glad to have found it.
This is a quiet (especially the first CD) and nice set.

Default Bach, J B: Ouvertures

One of my Christmas self-gifts...

Johann Bernhard Bach: Ouvertures
L’Achéron, François Joubert-Caillet

Saw this highlighted by Presto Classical as a 2017 ECHO Klassik Award Winner. Here is the background:
Quote:
Johann Bernhard Bach (1676-1749) is a somewhat ill-known member of the family, but known by his first cousin once removed, Johann Sebastian. A disciple of Pachelbel, he was in the service of the court of Eisenach and left us only instrumental music. His four Ouvertures for orchestra constitute the obvious link between French music of the Grand Siècle and the compositions that Johann Sebastian would write in Weimar and Cöthen. A missing link to be (re) discovered.
Even though these are orchestral works, I would describe them as chamber music where the winds (e.g., flute, oboe, bassoon) have a prominent role. I enjoyed hearing this music and even though these Ouvertures are not in the JSB league you might find them to be a pleasant encounter as I did. The low pitch used by the ensemble robs the sound of some of its brightness.

Default Carbonelli: Sonate da Camera Nos. 1-6

More new music...

Carbonelli: Sonate da Camera Nos. 1-6
Bojan Čičić (violin)
The Illyria Consort

This was selected as one of the Top Ten Discs for 2017 by Presto Classical. I had never heard of this composer or performers so I decided to check it out. Some background:
Quote:
In certain respects, Giovanni Stefano Carbonelli does not quite fit the eighteenth-century mould. For a neo-Corellian, he is unusually fond of complexity, both technical and compositional, and also unusually open to other contemporary influences, such as those of Handel and Vivaldi.

But the quality of his music speaks for itself – virtuosic and joyously melodic, these six ‘chamber sonatas’ had a huge impact on Delphian producer Paul Baxter. Carbonelli’s difficulty has ensured that his work is seldom played, but early-music rising star Bojan Čičić makes sure we have no sense of that as he and his Illyria Consort colleagues champion these groundbreaking compositions with exuberant confidence. Bojan Čičić is leader of Florilegium and frequently guest directs the Academy of Ancient Music and European Union Baroque Orchestra. He founded The Illyria Consort to explore rare repertoire of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This is their first recording.
Stately music sharply played and recorded. I like this disc better than the Bach Ouvertures I posted above.

Default Stravinsky: Orchestral Works

Here is a classic...

Stravinsky:
Fireworks, Op. 4
Le Chant du Rossignol
Scherzo a la Russe
Tango
The Firebird
London Symphony Orchestra, Antal Doráti

The highlight here is the complete The Firebird ballet recorded at the Watford Town Hall in June 1959. A terrific performance in famously wonderful sound. The SACD remaster is in The Absolute Sound's list of Top 40 Best Sounding-Recordings. I got the regular redbook disc which sounds very good.

Ed, indeed, I've seen your Glass posts on different forums.
This is a wonderful set, I'm listening to it again, and I had it playing in my car too.
Was singing Koyaanisqatsi along.
Thank you!
