They update the network box. The do not change the wires so it is not 100% Gen 5. Actually I would have lived with the MM2 but what they heck it wasn't that much to upgrade.

I guess it is like optioning out a Porsche. It isn't the base price that gets you.

At least with Transparent and MIT cables we get a "box" to hold the snake oil and it isn't just spread on the wires.

Yeah perhaps, but I'm still skeptical just because there is nothing they know that other companies don't know worldwide about how to design a balanced cable so I suspect what people pay for is what may or may not be different in the box between the unbalanced and balanced models.

I have no idea why they charge so much more for balanced compared to single ended. Yes all of their balanced cables Reference and above have two Network boxes where the single ended for the same cables only have one but almost doubling the price is steep as you note.

I am sure that the cross section of raw cable between unbalanced and balanced version will be different.
But it will never cost 2X like this.

My Reference MM SC has been been cal. for Moon W7M and Revel Salon2.
But I use it with Gryphon amp and Magico speakers now. Even free recal. Service offered, I still hesitate to send it back.
I don't see how they can open the network box without damaging it.

I have often wondered the same thing... I have had cables 'upgraded' in my many years of seeking Audio Nirvana and have often thought that what has come back from the dealer / manufacturer is a brand new cable.

Hi the Balanced cable will have one more conductor...this I suspect costs a "little" more. The real reason for the 2x price is the 2nd network. This is where they feel their R&D costs and ability to charge more come from. I agree it's a little frustrating. On the other hand...Tranparents cables sound pretty good. And it's a free market...you don't have to buy it...we all have choices. I made my choice for Transparent...

Speakers: Rockport Altair 2
Preamp: Robert Koda K10 Amp: Ayre MX-R
Cables: Transparent Opus MM2 Spkr, Opus MM2 & Trans Ref MM MM2 Intcnct.
Power Shunyata Triton/Typhon, Anaconda Zitron cords (x9)
Digital dCS Vivaldi DAC, Transport & Clock w/ Transparent Reference XL Digital cables
Phono: Grand Prix Monaco TT, Schroder LT arm, Jan Allaerts MC2 Finish & Lyra Atlas, Nagra VPS/VFS
Racks: Grand Prix Audio Silverstone F1 (x2)

I sent my Reference MM SC to be recalibrated when I changed my amps. They did not damage it. Same for the phono cable. You have to pack it carefully. Getting it back in the original box is quite difficult I must say.
