Wow...so I was trying to figure out where the notion of 3 jumps come from. If it's from this chart:

Opus Series
  • Old
    • Opus MM2
  • New
    • Magnum Opus
    • Opus
Reference Series
  • Old
    • Reference MM2
    • Reference XL
    • Reference
  • New (Gen 5)
    • XL
    • Reference
    • Ultra

If that list is accurate and reflects renaming as well as place in heirarchy, it will be extremely confusing. It actually seems to me that if you go from the old "Reference" and upgrade one level, you STAY at "Reference"!

Marc
I think we just need to wait and see. It is probably marketing speak. I am guessing the point they are trying to get across is that they new products should be noticeably better. Gen 5 Ultra might be as goo as the current Ref XL. We will see.

Reminds me of how we were all scratching our head over the new arc galileo series. Still am...

These marketing people know they have us all over a barrel. Lol

I'm happy to see the Reference MM2 name is out. This was not a good name and have led to confusion on several occasions (Reference MM2 MM2 tech)

The only remaining TA cable in my system is RMM of reference MM sc, MM2 tech.
My IC are Stage3 Gryphon.
Oh there is one PLMM2 left too, feeding Marantz pre pro.

I always wanted to try Opus SC, but with $$$ like that I will find alternative.

Marc,

The above table should be correct.

According to TA and the Hong Kong distributor:
  • this is TA's 5th generation of audio cables (thus "Gen 5");
  • the new Gen 5 products that have been launched so far are as follows:
    • TA Magnum Opus (Gen 5)
      • is the new flagship
    • TA Opus (Gen 5)
      • is currently still undergoing Gen 5 re-engineering from the current TA Opus, and it is yet to be confirmed if there will be any changes to the aesthetics
    • TA XL (Gen 5)
    • TA Reference (Gen 5)
    • TA Ultra (Gen 5)
      • will not be calibrated to specific gear unlike the other cables above
  • when the current TA Reference XL was undergoing its Gen 5 re-engineering/transformation to TA XL (Gen 5), the improvements in sonic performance came so close to the current TA Reference MM2 that it was decided that the current TA Reference MM2 would be dropped from the line;
  • except for TA Opus (Gen 5), all of the above Gen 5 cables were officially launched at the 2014 Hong Kong High-End Audio Visual Show (8 to 10-Aug-2014) and are now available for order here in Hong Kong with a 2-3 month delivery time, however, they have yet to be officially launched in the U.S.;
  • there has been no news if/when the "Super", "Plus", "Musiclink/Wave" and "The Link/Wave" lines will undergo Gen 5 re-engineering; and
  • given this new Gen 5 revamp and the difference in naming convention, it is unclear if TA will retain the same categories - ie. "Opus Series", "Reference Series", "Premium Series" and "High Performance".

Philip,

Do you know if Transparent Audio proposes an "update" program for customers in Hong Kong using TA cables with MM2 technology in order to get them updated to Gen-5 technology?

Bertrand,

As far as I know, I am not aware if the local Hong Kong distributor (Jadis Electronics Ltd.) is offering an "update"/"upgrade" program for those customers wanting to upgrade their TA cables from MM2 technology to Gen 5 technology.

If I hear otherwise, I will let you know.

What is it they say? If you have to ask, you cannot afford?
