JL Audio E110 in the house....

Hey Gang,

As some of you know, I've been putting a bit of a focus on the video side of things, with the not too long ago purchases of two Oppo Blu ray players, the BDP-105D in my office,
followed by the BDP-103 in the master bedroom system. Spending more time in the bedroom watching movies, I've had the itch for some time to get a subwoofer in that room. It (was)
the only of my 4 systems that lacked a sub. I've been thrilled with the JL Audio E112 that I put in my office system just about a year ago....

In assessing what would work well in the bedroom, there was really only one choice that seemed to be the answer-the "little brother" of the E112, known as the E110. The placement options
in the room were scant, and the space available really wasn't going to allow anything larger. But, judging from the great results I've had with the E112, I was pretty sure the E110 would do the job nicely.

The one and only available location for the sub was going to require some pretty long cables as well, so along with the sub I ordered from Ivan I had him include two pairs of Wireworld Oasis
interconnects in 6 meter length. One thing I really like about the E series subs is the hi-pass output option, which is really important when using small monitors like I am in both the office and bedroom (JBL 4401's).



Using the high pass arrangement with the E series subs, we can relieve the small monitors of the lowest bass notes, improving headroom, lowering IM distortion in both speakers and main amplifier,
and improving midrange at the same time.

The 4401's really do well on their own considering their size, but let's face it, they're not going to shake the room. That's where JL Audio comes to the rescue.

Needless to say, I was excited when the new good arrived, which Ivan got to me in nothing less than trans-warp speed...












Setup was easy and straightforward, as was the setup of the E112. I'm crossing over at 80hz, with the gain control set at roughly 10 O'clock. Anything more is just too much....which I also found
to be true in the office with my e112.

How does the system sound with this new sub in place? Fabulous! The bass is deep and powerful, and has totally transformed this smaller system into a really big sounding rig. I had to raise it up
about 8 inches or so in order to not have the sub totally blocked by the bed, as you'll see in the photos.

There was a bit of a concern that this somewhat less than ideal placement would be a problem, but it has worked out fine. Here are a few shots of the sub in place, and of the system's arrangement in the room.

There just isn't much more to say here except that I'm thrilled with the improvement this "little" subwoofer has brought to the bedroom system. Often times I can't really tell that the subwoofer is even there, just that the system
sounds really good. This is how it should be, of course.

On another note, this system being the only of my four setups that could lend itself to being converted to a 5.1 surround system (it's the only one that has the TV screen between the speakers) I find myself toying with the idea of
converting the system to a full surround setup. But that dose pose another set of thorny challenges, mostly involving real estate (or lack of it) for the electronics that will be required.

But for now, I'm not fretting over that. I'm just enjoying the hell out of this system. More often than not, I watch at least one movie per night in there, sometimes more on weekends.

I couldn't be happier, thanks in no small part to Ivan, who once again has come through with better than perfect service.

Pete.......Talk about squeezing in a sub, man the E110 is about as big as you could go. I'm happy to hear it fills the room with deep bass. Movie sound tracks require a subwoofer, it's as simple as that. I have little doubt the entire system came to life with this addition. Looking good! .

Dan....thanks. Yes, I kept checking and re-checking to see if I could sneak in the E112, and there was just no way. The E110 fits in like a glove, and works out well. It was "meant to be", as they say.

Dave....thanks. I'm really liking it, you really wouldn't know it's the "little brother" to my office sub, the E112.

Ivan....thanks and thanks again for the lightning fast service. As for the photos, my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge really does take nice photos very conveniently.

On another point, as to the hi-pass output feature of the E series-I might be wrong but I don't think the Fathom or Dominion lines offer this feature.

Here's another vote for the e110s. They replaced a pair of 15" subs which imposed positioning constraints and they are impressive for their smooth integration with system and room. Music in the Round #80 | Stereophile.com

Kal....A very interesting review; thanks for posting it.

The excerpt below describes exactly what I've found myself doing more than once since I installed a single E110 in the room:

"The JL Audio E-Sub e110s meshed better with my system than had the 15" sub they'd replaced, and my ears couldn't identify them as discrete sources of sound; often, I needed to get up to feel, with my hands, where all that firm, clean, deep bass could be coming from. It seemed as if the five main speakers themselves had been endowed with greater capabilities. And, of course, in a sense, they had".

Yes, maybe the moment for the pleasures of a surround set-up?
Even a decent receiver could give the needed (pre)amplification...
