Oppo and Roon

I’ve been enjoying Tidal for some time now. Last evening I looked into the mysterious (to me) Roon for the first time. Sounds interesting. Now that my curiosity is peaked, I need to figure out the plan to implement it. I read up a bit and I “think” I understand the concept.

If I start out with my windows 10 PC, I should be able to use my recently purchased Oppo UDP-203 which is supposed to be Roon ready as a Roon point and it’s digital out to feed my Schiit Gungnir DAC. Is that right? What are the advantages of the Roon NUC or ROCK then?

Yup but, AFAIK, no multichannel or DSD.

If you didn't have a suitable host for Roon Core, they would be relevant.

I can use my MacBook Pro or my windows PC, for the Roon Core. Which would be the preferred? I understand if I want to mess around with DSP, computing power is important?

Yes but which of those is more powerful and how much power do you need? I suggest that you install ROON on both and see what works for you.

Interesting question Kal. Both about the same age and somewhat similar specs but I’ll double check. I have my USB hard drive with almost 1TB of FLAC ripped music on the windows pc so I’ll probably install the Roon on the PC first to make things easier.

I have been running Roon core on my late 2016 MacBook Pro wirelessly without a hitch. I have been told be several individuals that I would be better off running Roon Rock hard wired to my network on a NUC, or other ROCK capable device. (There are several listed on the Roon site or wait (and wait) for one of Roon's delayed Nucleus devices.) From what I have read the NUC although a bit less expensive would be the less desirable than the other two types of offerings.

I think you will enjoy Roon. I still maintain Sooloos capability for my whole house system but my 2-channel room is now all Roon.It has better Tidal integration than Sooloos.

Well, I am up and running! Wow, right off the bat I can see I will really enjoy this experience. I have much discovering to do with this new interface but so far, the expanded album information is nice! "Focus on this" is a very nice feature that I will use often to discover new music. I am a big headphone listener and the crossfeed/binaural may come in handy for those hard panned earlier recordings that I enjoy from time to time. Interesting to see they added settings and profiles for Audeze headphones. The biggest advantage right off the bat was my 1TB FLAC ripped drive full of music which was not used for years now due to a lack of a convenient way of accessing the music.

Have not tried the Oppo UDP-203 yet but it was recognized as a Roon ready device and I'll give it a try later.

Roon is a great user interface, easy to use and sounds good, I have been using it for about a year now. I first ran it on my MacBook pro but then switched to a dedicated i5 machine from Small Green Computer so that it's always on and ready to play. I have no knowledge of the Oppo 203 since I still have a Oppo 105D. I run the Sonore Signature Rendu as my Roon endpoint which sounds fantastic. The most important thing is it sounds good to you and you are enjoying the interface to play your existing music and find new music. Enjoy!!!
