Stock is (+) on left screw and (-) on right screw, period. Both speakers are the same. Anything different has been modified from the factory. If you want to look inside or pull off the screw terminal plate to confirm (+) is indicated by yellow wire and (-) by brown.

I owned a pair of Altec Valencia speakers for years back in the 70's. I wish I had never sold them. They used the Altec N-800 crossover. Here is the crossover schematic.

Those are for the 8 ohm Milanos. The 16 ohm versions of that family usually have the N800-F - basically the same diagram but the inductors are 3.5mH, the HF cap is 4 uF, and the LF parallel cap is 10.5uF.

Pick some back up Dan! =)

I'll have to triple-check that I don't have both out of absolute phase! haha

Well I was going off of the -7 Rev of the schematic when I made my crossovers but I've come across labels showing + as brown as well so wow more confusing that I first imagined. I can pretty much guaranty that I followed the yellow wire from the sealed crossover can to the marked + terminal on the left side but let's just say I'm glad that I am using my own crossovers so there is no question that (+) is going to the red HF path and green LF path. =)

I popped one of my back covers off just to confirm. Indeed the YELLOW (+) is wired to the LEFT, if facing the back of the speaker. The BROWN (-) wire is of course, wired to the RIGHT. So as I had figured, BROWN is (red) Right channel, while YELLOW is (black) left channel. Better safe than to be out of phase (-: Thanks to all!

The red cable is positive and the black is negative on the a23 speaker cables.
This has nothing to do with right and left channels.
So, if the positive terminal is on the left as you are looking at the rear of the Valencia, you would plug the red on the left and the black on the right.
This was how it was on my Valencias before I moved to the outboard crossover.
Unless I am misunderstanding you, I am pretty sure you have it backwards.

Jay

Thanks Jaybass- I didn't feel 100%, so let me get this straight. The LEFT (internally wired yellow) +, would get the RED (right channel) A23 wire. Then the RIGHT (internally wired brown) - , would get the BLACK (left) A23 wire. I very rarely feel like an idiot when it comes to audio, but that's not the case at the moment (-:

Don.......An alternative way to determine the phase of speaker input terminals is to use a AA battery (1-1/2 volts) and attach short lengths of wire to each speaker terminal. Make sure the speakers are not connected to an amplifier. Hold one wire to the negative end of the AA battery, then quickly touch and remove the other wire to the positive end on the battery. If the woofer moves outward when you touch the wire to the positive end on the AA battery then that wire is connected to your positive(+) terminal. If the woofer pulls inward when you touch the wire to the positive end of the AA battery then that wire is connected to your negative (-) terminal.
