In 1901, New York became the first state to register automobiles; by 1918 all states required license plates. States were slower to require licenses for drivers. Only 39 states issued them by 1935 and few required a test, despite widespread concern about incompetent drivers.

My point was it was OK to be a driver without a license, until it wasn’t. It is OK to be a “human driver”, until it won’t be....

I know that, I was merely chuckling over the 'competency' part of it ...

Obviously, I knew to be careful and I took control as soon as I saw the limits of the system.

I think people are overly excited for ADV but we are still years away from a fully functional that could work outside of predefined cases. Highway is easy but city or rural road are the real challenges.
It's just a matter of implementing the right technology for the problems. If one thing doesn't work, another invention will cover it. One thing seems certain, the train has left the station and picking up steam to the destination and there ain't no stoppin' it. I'm not saying it is good or bad, time will tell...

I would imagine it is not too far fetched/sci-fi to imagine a scenario where the centralized AI platform will "see" and "control" all the moving cars in the vicinity and this way an individual car is no longer in control over anything itself but the main computer is. Knowing exactly where each and every vehicle is and having a bird's eye view sort of speak it can predict obstacles getting in the way of any moving car within its matrix, hence nearly 0% chance of collision with anything.

Serge - good article on LIDAR core technologies.

I am working with a client on LIDAR solutions for autonomous vehicles and it is super interesting.

The key capability is to be able to detect a black tire sitting on asphalt pavement 200 meters out.

At 65 mph you are doing about 30 meters/sec, and it takes 5 seconds to stop and not really stress out the passengers, leaving you with 1.6 seconds to acquire the target, determine if it is a threat, and initiate appropriate action.

The inexpensive all Silicon LIDAR’s can’t yet do this.

It’s just a matter of time.....big money is being thrown at the problem by multiple companies.

Fascinating stuff Tom. I know you can’t divulge too much information but do keep us in the loop as to progress if you can.
