Drapes and Lights
60 inches in back of sophia 1s is a large window with medium thickness drapes. when i replace the drapes is there a certain type of material i should use? dont know how dead really thick drapes might make the room??
I need some lamps for my stereo room. is there a certain type of lighting that is very good or very bad? is there a type of dimmer that does not hurt the sound? |

How is your room, now? If it's too lively, then go heavier...if it's a little dead, try something lighter. My room was too lively, so I just went from no drapes on five windows to a sheers with light/medium cotton drape combo (Pottery Barn) on all. I also added w/w carpeting over the h/w flooring, and it worked well for my room.
I also added lighting which is on different electrical circuits than those for the gear. I went with low voltage halogens via a transformer mounted on the ceiling (at 13.5 feet). I'm not dimming it, yet, but it came with a dimming coil to reduce buzz...which, obviously, I don't want. Hope that's of some help...

Hi Ray, the above advice is pretty spot-on, only you can determine what type of sound you want hence what sound treatment you apply. I'm about to set up a new stereo room & have decided from past experience that although the floor is concrete with laminate covering, I am just going to put large rugs over the floor & put drapes on 3 sides of the room as one side is partially open so the sound wont bounce & get caught in those 2 corners. Big heavy drapes are not at the top of the list for me, the smoother the material the less absorbing.

I would go with the heaviest drapes possible. Also, If you want complete darkness you may have to go two layers. I find that even the drapes that state they cut all light still let some through. Also, in my home theater room I actually had to cover the window as simply putting drapes in front of it did not stop light leaks around the sides.

Congrats on the Wilsons...hope you really get great enjoyment from them. I've been a Wilson fan for years, but only owned them for about fifteen months. Robert Sent from my DROIDX using A.Aficionado
