Default Comparing digitale files/sources to each other and to vinyl...

Thanks guys - I think I‘ll get started by ripping some of my collection to an external drive. I‘m very close to buying Roon (agree with crwilli though - one of my concerns with streaming/software is/was that you don‘t actually „own“ anything as far as the music goes and software is just software - so is it a collection to last?).

But I‘m starting to get hooked (I know the feeling;-) )...

A thought I actually have is to go step by step... buy an external drive, start ripping (any further recommendations for software? crwilli - organizing by folder understood, thx. I‘m more of a indi/alternative/punkrock or at least rock/pop singer/songwriter orientated person. Not so much into classical stuff - so that’s not an issue at the time).

Maybe the next step will then be Roon and merging the files. Maybe then the last step is really to get rid of the CD Transport and upgrade my Auralic Aries Femto (I do like the Aurender or the big Auralic)...

Suppose I‘m getting there... kinda ✌️[emoji6]

One more thing about organizing your files/folders. Regardless of how you organize your music in the hard drive or the NAS, the important information is the metadata that is embedded in every file.
Think of metadata as the notes that you used to write behind a printed photo.
For example, every song would have the following embedded metadata: name of song, artist, name of album, track number, genre, composer, etc. Roon uses the metadata from the files, not the folder structure.

Recommended software:
For ripping your CDs: DBPoweramp. DBpoweramp will automatically insert the metadata.

I also use MP3TAG as a dedicated program for changing the metadata. It is a "free" (donations welcome) software.

Trying to understand Roon. Say I have an iMac and an external attached storage as NAS, also iPhone & iPad... then I stream to my Auralic and from there to the DAC. Now I would store my FLAC/ripped files using the iMac and save them on the NAS. The NAS is integrated into the Network so that right now I could stream via the Auralic Lightning DS App. The way I understand it, ROON basically replaces the Lightning DS App (and does all the other things). So would I install the Roon software on the iMac as „core“ or would I install the software on the NAS? From what I understand I can then use the software and all the extras Roon offers from a mobile device (iPad/iPhone) and stream to the Auralic... (so basically Roon replaces the Auralic Lightning App but also needs to be intstalled as „core“ somewhere on a hard drive - right?).

I have found that the quality of the master is the most important thing that affects SQ in my system.

You need to install Roon core in your iMac not the NAS. And yes, Roon replaced the Auralic Lightening App.

Sounds good - I‘m starting to like the Idea. Is it then best to connect the NAS to the iMac and the NAS to the streamer via LAN-cable or do you go wireless?

Also - how much does the streaming bridge influence the SQ?

Is the DAC the be all/end all? Does it get noticeably better than with the Auralic Aries Femto?

Also I‘m still trying to figure out if the DAC in the McIntosh C52 allows full MQA playback? (According to the signal it displays I would assume it does)...

... as for the dBpoweramp - I need the Music Converter & CD Ripper Reference R16 Single Mac for 38€ - right?

Can anyone recommend a good storage/NAS?

Auralic recommends wireless for it specifically. Plug the rest into your router via ethernet. No need to get complex or worrying about what plugs into what.

C52 doesn't decode or render MQA.

Certainly don't limit your future DAC choices to MQA capable as Roon will do the most important first unfold for you.
