It is amazing how the tiniest difference can affect the sound so much. Anyway, the bass is now much deeper, better he defined, the midrange fell back to give the illusion of a deeper sound stage and there is more air than there was. All the things I expect a high definition turntable to provide. I will keep the Prime.
Have you played with the SRA/VTA? That's kinda hard to get in one shot, one day or even two days even say with a USB scope.

The table, and especially the motor and platter bearing needs at least 50-100 hrs to run in too. Then too does the tonearm wire.

Good to read that you are now making some good headway with your Prime set-up & sound. I'm on the fence between a Prime with the 3D arm and an Aries with Memorial 10.5" arm & SDS that I've run across. Am wondering which would be the better TT/TA set-up for my Lyra Kleos?

Myles,

Thanks for your suggestions. Ironically, I was playing with the arm height at it's base just last night to affect a change in SRA. The adjustment feature for that is pretty easy to use on VPI arms, perhaps the only thing that is really easy to adjust in their unipivot arms. The motor and platter have about 50 hours on them now and I will leave it on again tonight as I am sure that you are right about the need for thorough breakin. The difference between my KAB SL1200 and Prime should be greater than it is, and if break in of wire made any difference at all (and I am not convinced it does), that difference would be expected to make only a minor contribution to that difference. Focusing on cartridge alignment is proving to be effective. Overall, though, I will admit to being somewhat disappointed so far with the Prime.

Bill

Why don't you go to the VPI Forum on their website and ask Harry? It is very difficult to make an informed decision without being able to listen and compare isn't it? Harry would know and he is candid and honest. The VPI website includes a cartridge compatibility page. Without doubt the Kleos would work well with either arm.

I can tell you that the Aries 3 with 3D arm was a large step up from the prime. I have no idea how it would compare to the Aries with metal arm though.

Hmmm............. if I understand correctly, the 3D arm will drop right on the Memorial base with no additional changes. If correct, would be an easy up-grade path with the Aries, which is one of the earlier models. Decisions, decisions..............

Good idea. I'll do that. Sorry to read that you do not think the Prime is a worthwhile step up from your Technics. Hopefully, more fiddling will make it so. What phono stage are you using?

My phono stage is a cj TEA2MAX. My Technics has all of the magic that KAB offers, which is considerable. The Prime has some way to go before I am even willing to concede that it is as good as the KAB Technics all things considered. I played with interconnects last night. It sounds pretty good now, but it is a clunky damn thing. Other than the arm height adjustment, which is excellent, it is way off the pace in terms of ease of setup and user friendliness. But in terms of sound, it is superior in bass depth and clarity, the sound stage is deeper and there is a shimmer on the highs that the Technics lacks. But these differences are subtle. Too subtle.

Follow up report. I have ordered a protractor from a fellow member here and think it can only help. Also I spent a lot of time messing around with set up and now feel that the Prime sounds much better than it did at the start. Setup is not easy on this deck, though, and it is not forgiving at all.

That's good to read. Glad that its coming together for you. That's one reason I'm happy to let SSD install and adjust the cartridge on my new VPI in the morning. With the nude cantilever/stylus, it removes the risk of snapping off same (though I never have in the many years I've done cartridge installs) from me.
