I find the appearance of all Wilsons a bit off-putting so, with all the many options out there, I have never lusted after them. Using 800Di now after 802d.

I kinda like the slightly off-putting nature of their appearance.

It was garbage can vs motorcycle helmet per my wife...

Like you, I've always felt that Wilsons were a bit on the homely side, but I loved the sound. Now, I've REALLY begun to take to their look as industrial art.

Enjoying AA on my DROIDX

Karl, we took our decision down to the Sophia 2 & 802D's, and it was a tough one (Dynaudio also impressive). Like Randy, the comparisons were not A/B, so the decision was tough, as they usually are. I did not think the lows were inferior against each other, but the 802Ds being driven by the 501s in the demo we heard were very detailed, and the highs were excellent with the diamond tweeter. Like Kal, aesthetics came into the decision as well.

Now that was 3 years ago, and both models have been upgraded. The 802D2s sound better in the couple demos I've heard, maybe a bit tighter in the bass. Haven't had the opportunity to listen to the Sophia 3. I did spend a couple sessions at a friend's (Beerdraft) house listening to Wilson Sashas with BAT gear, and it was an incredible experience, taking things to another level, including price. The Sashas are also a better looking speaker than the Sophia 2 IMO.

You do owe it to yourself to drive to listen to the Sophias. I would have been happy with the Sophia 2's but don't think about it much at all.

Good tip. I'm in WI, so it wouldn't be totally out of the question to visit MI. What is the store?

They're around the same price.

What say you? Which one should I be saving for?

Has anyone heard both? Which has tighter and faster bass? Deeper?
Are you asking about the older 802D's or the newer 802 Series Diamond? The newer speakers do sound a bit different from the 802D's they replaced.

To answer your question regarding bass, the Sophia 3's probably have the edge over the older 802D's and probably are still a bit tighter than the even the newer Series Diamond.

In my opinion it is the mids and higher frequencies where the B&W's edge out he Wilson's, especially the newer B&W models. This does not mean that everyone is looking for the same sound or have the same preferences.
