Thanks Cyril!
I've always wanted to listen to a pair of Coincident speakers. I bet they sound nice. Joe |

Joe...I haven't heard them either but they are typically higher-than-average sensitivity and more importantly a benign load for tube amps, so are often mated with SET amps, although I would go with more than flea-powered SETs with these, something in the 15-25 wpc. I must admit, eventhough the reviewer raves about their finish, from an aesthetic standpoint, they do look a little blah to me. They have only 2 dealers in the US (1 in NYC and 1 in CT) so not the easiest brand to audition if you are somewhere else in the country.

Those side firing woofers are tough though. They can sometimes be very problematic to get set up just right...

I've always wondered about that, I've gravitated towards speakers like that until I found Alon/Nola. For me, easy setup and not fussy. I like that.

My favorite speaker manufacturer predominantly designs speakers with side-firing woofers - Rockport Technologies
By the way, the current issue of TAS has a review of the Rockport Altairs with a nice follow-up interview with Andy Payor. One thing I do agree with Robert Harley's take is that Andy Payor's speakers are not nearly as well known as they should be but in large part because Payor wants to maintain a small miche business where he can oversee every speaker made, so he does not market his speakers at all. He has more than enough business as it is for his size operation which he is happy with. He designs and produces some of the best speakers out there. When finances allow, that will be my next speaker. |
