Default Any other V3 owners on this forum

hello all Magico fans,

Are there any other V3 owners on this forum, I am interested to hear about other users, their amplification, cables, sources and room sizes.

Greetings,

Olaf

Hi Olaf, I just picked up a pair of V3's two weeks ago to replace my Martin Logan Spire's and Von Schweikhert VR 4 HSE3 speakers. I am still exploring the Magico's, working on placement (fractions of inches matter) and amplifiers. My front end is an Ayre QB9, sota sapphire/MMT/dynavector Karat17d3, Audio Research PH5, a heavily modified Marantz SA14 and a Korg M1000. My preamp is an Audio Research Reference 1. I cycle between 3 amps, an Audio Research VT100 III , a Krell KAV 2250 and a nuforce V2 SE. Speaker cables are Stereovox and interconnects are Acoustic Zen Silver Reference, power cords are MAC Paradise. All I know is I am totally sleep deprived as I am listening, listening and listening some more getting a handle on things. All 3 amps sound great in different ways, but one thing is for sure, the Magico's want power to open up and come alive. Fortunately all 3 amps are up to the task, but will most likely chose a flavor and then move up-stream. I'll keep you posted.
What is your rig?
Cheers,
Ron

Hi Ron,

My set up is more simple, Accuphase E-560 Amplifier, Wadia 381i CD player, NBS black label PC for the Wadia, Jena Labs PC for E-560, Cardas Golden cross interconnect and NBS Omega extreme 1 speaker cables.

I have a Wireworld platinum exclipse XLR on order to replace the Cardas IC.

Overall I am very happy with the V3's, highs, mid and lows are blending in very well, wide soundstage with good height, and if it is in the recording great depth. Low frequency wise, the V3's are working well with my room.
(not as much volume as my previous focals, but there is much more definition and very fast attacks, also it is easy to follow the bass lines)

Everywhere I read that the Magico's need a lot of power, the factory figures that Accuphase is giving are not high, only 2x60 watts @ 4 Ohm. (although some magazines have measured a 2x120 watts @ 4 Ohm, and the amplifier is even stable at 2 and 1 Ohm loads)

So although I am happy with how the system performs, In the back of my mind there is still the idea to try a A65/A46 stereo power amplifier from Accuphase.

Olaf

Hi,

My ARC Ref40+Ref75 work well with Magico Q3. But lack pop and bite driving V3.
Accuphase A200 also drive Q3 very well, but never tried A65 or A46.

Hi cpreal,

Congratulations with V3's, what equipment will you use to power the Magico's.

Regards,

Hi Olaf,
I think you do need much more power/current than what you have now to truly realize V3's full potential, they will only open up and dig deep given sufficient juice. A little easier load than Mini2, but definitely much harder drive than Q3..

Gave my V3s to my brother who uses ARC CD8+REF5SE+REF150 - closed-in, lacked bass (quantity as well quality) - he traded them 2 months later for Sashas which work better in his room/system. I used to drive them (V3) with vintage dCS stack+Soulution710, which I thought was quite a pretty good match.

What's your room size?

Hi bvdman,

My room is medium size, 6mtr x 4mtr, all concrete walls, ceiling and floor.

I don't have the feeling the V3's are holding back with the Accuphase, but maybe an A65 will improve things. I want to stay with Accuphase class A amplifiers.

I have heard the magico V3, with spectral dma 260, regretable not in my own room, but in that configuration there was not more bass and slam, even prefer mids and highs with the Accuphase. Soundstage is difficult to compare as it was not in my own listening room.
The demo room was around 8x5mtr.

Olaf

Hi Olaf,
If you are particular to Class-A Accuphase, then yes I think in your sized room, A65 would be just about perfect, if as indicated, your E-560 is driving the V3s nicely now. Surprisingly, REF150 could not extract V3s full potential (espc.the lows) even though my brother's room is quite small, similarly around 4m x 6m.

IME, the A-Accuphases usually sounded/and is, way more powerful than what their ratings would indicate. Given right cabling, their A-200s manage to dig down deep with excellent control and grip, with mids and highs that are simply beguiling ~ I can understand as to why you are hooked..

The E-560 is stable to even 1 Ohm loads, and yes I am hooked on the Accuphase quality and sound.

A-200 are gorgeous pieces of equipment, in combination with the 3800 an absolute dream.
But I think I would have to add airconditioning to the room during the summer.
