Jim, how could such a small item costs more than a beast like MC1.2Kw? Illogical isn't it?

Seriously, if I do my thing right, next year will be one big change for me!

With some time pieces like Lange for example, there is actually much more hand labor that goes into it. Often with parts count well over 300, each part has to be made, checked, polished, fitted, decorated, assembled and in the case of Lange reassembled and put back together again. Some serious man hours are put into each individual time piece both from the mechanical and hand decorating aspect of manufacturing process. Of course the watch cases are also made from precious metals adding to the cost.

What is more illogical is how can an MC1.2KW cost more than a car?

This will NEVER ever happen here. The smallest Geely car (happen to be the cheapest), is now priced at closed to S$60k, while a pair of MC1.2Kw is only about half $30k.

If you think thats ridiculous, today a 1000 square feet Condo is now COMMONLY priced S$2.2m and above. I happen to see one I like and after hearing the price, quickly made my exit. S$4.2m for only 2000 square feet. Think we are going crazy like HK .........

The cars you owned? Well, I can never afford to own .... cause base price will be like starting from $400k.

Cheers!

For those of us in the US here is how the costs for a car added up in Singapore.

Overall cost of the car
Registration fee + Cost Price + Road Tax + COE + additional registration fee (140% of OMV) and customs duty (31% of OMV).

So take a $50 BMW in the US and add 140% OMV and 31% Custom Duty plus at least $35K COE and you will easily be over $200k.

Jim,

You qualify to become a permanent resident ... !

Just a flavor of how much a car cost today. A Mercedes S350 will cost S$368k and going up (that depends on the COE - Certificate Of Entitlement which hoovers around S$50k today - a car birth certificate of sorts).

HiFi and watches seems so much affordable in comparison!

Cheers!

I think it was the Beatles who said:
"If you own a car they'll tax your gas, if you own are cart they'll tax your ass."

Tax is on everything - 7% GST (on everything, eat, buy, etc, ...).
Personal tax maxed at 20%.
Gas is at S$1.96 per liter (about S$7.84 = US$5.6 per gallon).
Housing is now about S$1000 per sq. foot.

Schwinn Bike? Hardly my friend ........
