Jan 12AT7 (8)
Tung Sol 12AX7 (6)

This is easily worth the upgrade. The first thing noticed is the highs are more lively and an overall open sound. I notice no difference in the bass.

I'm still playin loud for longer.....I like this....

JC.......I am listening to this exact tube compliment right now, and loving it. You are so right about the open sound. The overall clarity is astonishing. Another thing I am impressed with is the absolute silence. When a musical note or voice fades to silence, it is absolutely silent, total blackness. The faintest of sounds rise from this black velvet perfectly audible and clear, no grit, no haze, just sweet, sweet music.

I am pleased to know you tubed up your MC275's with the identical compliment as my two amps. I know just what you are enjoying. Even when I am completely worn out from my day, I literally have to force myself to turn the tube system off. Every minute with it is pure joy.

Do the Jan 12AT7 and the Tung Sol 12AX7 need to be matched?

Are these the ones?

DJ.......Yes, those are the tubes.

Is has been said that McIntosh tube amps, based on their design and the way they use both sides of the tube, that matching isn't critical. My approach is matched tubes can't harm anything either, and the service is reasonably priced. I have my tubes matched, whether I buy two four or eight, I pay the addition fee for matching.

Thanks Dan. I may give those a try. It's only $50. :-)

DJ.......And well worth it. Don't let the low price on the Philips 12AT7 tubes fool you. The are very quiet, and sound great. You will need four 12AT7's, not two. Leaving the stock McIntosh tube in the first 12AX7 socket is ok, as long as you don't ever plan to use unbalanced cables for any reason. If you do, you'll want to put a Mullard 12AX7 there, too. Do it now, and you'll never have to make a change later.

5751's in the 12ax7's spot's can work really nicely too. Neil turned me on to the whole 5751 thing.

Mark...

just one more tube rollin option to play with.

David.......Thank you. I would have to pull both MC275's out of the rack to get them both in the same photo. This photo was taken the day the amp arrived from Terry, when I only had one.

Hi...to clarify...am trying to buy those tubes from Doug's Tubes and as for the AT's, they list 2 types:
JAN Philips 12AT7 Blackplate

Can be used as a phase splitter. Change your phase splitter every time you need to change power tubes. Also used to tame the gain. 80's military prod, green lettering, blackplate. Also used as reverb driver in some amps. These can be suitable for V1

JAN Philips 12AT7 Greyplate

Used as a phase splitter Change your phase splitter every time you need to change power tubes. 80's military prod, blue lettering, gray plate. Also used as reverb driver in some amps.

Which one is it?

As for the AX's & KT's

Are these the ones?

Tung-Sol 12ax7 Re-issue

Gold Lion KT88

In 1957 Marconi-Osram Valve Co. (Genalex) introduced the "King of Power Tubes", the legendary Gold Lion KT88. This tube became the heart and soul of such classics as the Dynaco Mark III, McIntosh MC275, and Marshall Major. Unfortunately, Genalex ceased tube production in the early 1980s. This original has been hard to find.

Thanks!
