R2R Tape Handling
Looking for help from members experienced with R2R tape. I plan on placing my R2R tape machine between 2-3 feet away from the back of my loudspeaker on a shelf. My loudspeakers have multiple drivers and are not shielded. The loudspeakers have two 15" drivers with the magnet structure exposed and not enclosed in a cabinet. I guess I could purchase a Gauss meter or Manometer and measure the magnetic field at the location where I want to place the R2R machine. The goal is to not damage an pre-recorded tapes or any recordings I will make.
Maybe I just being overly cautious, but I interested in knowing thoughts from those experienced with tape.

Don.......I suspect the magnetic field from your woofer magnets extend beyond 12 inches although I doubt the field at 24 inches would be strong enough to impact the recorded tape. One thing you will need to pay close attention to with a tape machine that close to exposed magnets is to make sure you keep the reels of recorded tape away from the magnets while you are handling them. It doesn't take a lot of flux density to begin rearranging the iron oxide particles on tape. You may not erase an area on the tape but you may reduce the signal strength and introduce noise.
If it were me, I would be more inclined to keep any tape machines at least 4 feet or more from speakers to ensure no accidents.

Thanks for the responses Ivan & Dan.
It confirms that my initial concerns was warranted, and that siding on the cautious side when locating your tape machine is best. I could not find any great information on line, but this covered the topic of stray magnetic fields on tape. APPENDIX 1: Ampex Guide to the Care and Handling of Magnetic Tape In preparation for my tape machine coming back from a complete overhaul, I will be relocating the equipment rack in the room so the machine will be 6+ feet away from the nearest speaker.
